Q: How do you know if you properly reset the SMC?  Where can you check?

I've found instructions very easily on what buttons to press to reset the SMC, but how do I know that I actually did it right?  Conceivably, I could have missed the timing of the button pushing, but wouldn't know because the computer simply restarted (without resetting the SMC) instead of restarting after resetting SMC

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

    It never hurts to do the SMC reset more than once.You know if has been successful if the MBP starts when it did not do so before or the symptom that prompted to perform it disappears.  Otherwise you do not know.
