Q: Handoff and AirDrop not working in El Capitan

After upgrading to OS X 10.11 El Capitan, my Handoff and AirDrop stopped working between iOS 9.0.2 on iPhone 5S and my MacBook Pro Late 13. I've tried logging out of iCloud account on both devices numerous times, it didn't help.

For my friend with MacBook Air and iPhone 5S with same iOS version it works flawlessly.

Did anyone encounter similar issue, and if so, how did you solve it?

    Hi guys,

I went to Apple Store today. They tested and told me, it is really the problem with EI Captain.

He said if there are more and more people report, Apple will get this fixed.

So everyone, just call the Apple care and let them know!

I had this issue immediately upon upgrading to El Capitan the day it was released, and called Apple for support.

My ticket has been open with them since then, the last update being that it was escalated to Engineering.  Hopefully an update is pushed out to fix this soon as having no AirDrop or Handoff really kills a few of my workflows and takes away the primary value of having Mac over PC.

    Hello MickNL,

Yes, this is exactly the same for me. Handoff and continuity features also work except for Airdrop.

I read on in hope to find a fix.

Interestingly thou, Airdrop works between my iPhone and iPad. Just not between iPad/iPhone and Mac.

I take that back. Interesting. it works between iPad and Mac, iPhone and iPad but not iPhone and Mac. Have to find out what's different on the iPhone. My iPhone is an iPhone 6 running iOS 9.0.2, same version as the iPad. Will keep testing.

Ok something weird is happening on my end. The iPhone and iPad see each other on Airdrop and the Mac sees the iPad and iPhone. But iPhone and iPad don't see the Mac on Airdrop. Mac can send files to iPhone and iPad but none can send to Mac so I also think it's El Capitan.

I don't think that anyone has mentioned from what I have seen, forgive me if I missed something in someone's comment, but the most obvious thing to me that supports the general consensus that this is a problem with El Capitan, is that El Cap no longer has the option available in System Preferences/General for anything relating to handoff.

I have always had this option in the past on my MacBook and now that my handoff capabilities do not work, the absence of this selection in Preferences implies that the ability is not even available to me in El Cap. I discovered during researching the problem that the Apple web page for the El Capitan download relating to the Handoff feature states that if the option is not available in your System Preferences/General menu, then your device does not have the capability; HOWEVER, as I said, my device had the capability in the past with Yosemite. Also, I point out that, although I have an older model MacBook, I did confirm prior to the install of El Cap that my MacBook was a supported device for the El Cap upgrade.

Seems as if El Cap has an issue with some devices in not recognizing handoff capability or installing the function properly. Either that or those of us with older MacBooks may be out of luck with handoff capabilities moving forward. Hope that isn't the case.

In my case, the option is visible and enabled.

You might want to check the System Report in About this Mac… Go to the Bluetooth section. Do you see:

    Bluetooth Low Energy Supported: Yes

    Handoff Supported: Yes

    Instant Hot Spot Supported: Yes

If it does not look like that, try an SMC reset

AirDrop seems to be dependent on bluetooth preference pane being open on a late 2011 17 MBP.  If the pane is not open, the 17" MBP is not visible as a target on other iOS or OS X devices.  Tried PRAM reset with no change in result.

Hi am285 and to all community,

I've got the exact same issue. I have checked everything in settings related to WiFi, Bluetooth, Network etc, on my Macs and iDevices, but the connectivity problem between them remains. To be more specific, AirDrop between my iOS devices, iPad Air 2 & iPhone 6 Plus with iOS 9.0.2, works fine. AirDrop between my iMac (Late 2014) and MacBook Pro (Late 2014), also works fine. When I was trying to connect my iPhone with my iMac and MacBook Pro I saw that iMac could see my iPhone and was trying to pair with it by sending a code. When I was taping "Pair" the connection was not possible. I tried a couple of times with no result.

I remember that when I had already done the upgrade to El Capitan from Yosemite I tried to send a picture from my iPhone to my MacBook Pro via AirDrop and it was working (it was very slow). I tried to send a second one but it was not sent. After that, until today AirDrop does not work.

I strongly believe that there is, if I could say like that because I am not a expertise, a "recognition issue" between OS X El Capitan and iOS 9.0.2. I wish Apple will fix it as soon as possible with the next releases because AirDrop is REALLY handy!!
