Q: Apple TV keeps crashing NON-STOP!!!

We use Apple TV for all our TV watching in all rooms.  We bought them at separate times, but they are the same model.  We have Apple TV Software 6.2.1 and Resolution 720p.

Our Netflix and Hulu keeps crashing 3-4 times per show, and our music app crashes when playing songs, whether I am streaming it using Airplay from my iPhone or using the AppleTV app.

Our Apple TV just crashes and crashes and crashes!!!!!  YES!  I have restarted the Apple TV devices.  YES! I have unplugged the modem and router and plugged them back in (in the proper sequence).  YES!  Our wifi speed is fast enough: over 60 Mbs download & 15 Mbs upload.  YES!  I have reset our ALL of our Apple TV devices to factory settings and set them back up again as new.  I have done ALL of the usual advice for fixing the problem.

We are avid Apple fans but are getting sick of the constant crashing.  We can't get through one show without having it crash at least once.

I have had the same issue with the same Apple TV Software and have yet to find a solution. It's a great product but it's becoming unusable at this point when we can't use Netflix or Hulu, and randomly resets with the other apps as well.

Ditto. Both of our ATV's have been doing it. Unable to find a pattern except it happens with Hulu and Netflix.

Same issue here. It began a few month ago and it's getting worse. I have it on HBO and Netflix. Interestingly it never happens with Apples own apps, Movies and TV Shows. I guess all of the Apple devs are too busy with the new Apple TV!

I have been having the exact same problem for months now. It makes Apple TV unusable. Only programs that work without resetting are items bought from the Apple store. I have the second generation Apple TV and I have tried everything, Even bought new cables and tried new ports. The only way I can watch anything non-Apple related is to stream it from my phone to Apple TV.

It's so bad now that I'm going to stop using Apple TV for anything other than Apple Movies and TV Shows. I'm even having issues streaming to it from my phone via AirPlay. I can't play a single thing without it breaking at some point and the issue seems to be the AirPlay connection. It's very frustrating and very un Apple like.

There are several recent posts on the internet as well as Apple's discussion pages regarding random reboots when attempting to view Netflix and/or Hulu on the AppleTV2. I started having the same problem about 3 weeks ago with Netflix (I don't use Hulu). I suspect that something changed with Apple's servers, or perhaps there was a bad update pushed by Apple (it does happen from time to time). In any case, my work around has been to stream Netflix content from my iPad (via the Netflix app) to my AppleTV2. It works, but it is not a solution.

Has anyone experienced this issue with an AppleTV3?

The 2nd gen hasn't been updated for quite some time, and if that were the case it would be widespread. Have you done anything to troubleshoot?

I have tried replacing the cables and trying new ports on the TV. I have also manually restarted my router and tested the speed which was normal. It also happens on other stations besides Hulu and Netflix. I have the same problem on PBS and Smithsonian, as well as others, when watching via Apple TV. The only shows that work are the ones available from the Apple store. I was planning on buying the new AppleTV this when it is released but not if it is going to have these same issues.

Make sure DNS is set to auto (settings - general - network)

Get a diagnostic report from istumbler, netstumbler or similar. Look for signal strength, noise, nearby networks

    Try ethernet

    Test on another network

The DNS was already set to auto. The signal strength is fine. I cannot try another network but I will try the ethernet. Although, if it was a problem with the network or signal, I would be having the same issue on programs bought via Apple TV. AS I said before, the only time I do not get disconnected is when watching TV shows or movies I have purchased from Apple. Anything else (Netflix, Hulu, etc...) gets disconnected often. I also use Chromecast on my TV in the upstairs bedroom, which is about 20-30 feet from the router downstairs, and it has never disconnected.

What were the values for signal, and noise from the diagnostics report? Ethernet will help. Taking to another network would mean going to another location, or you could take to Apple for testing. Other things working does not rule out the network

I Have the same issue. I have an PS4, Amazon Fire TV, same apps have no issue, only the Apple TV. It's  either the box or the OS, not sure how the network could cause this is with multiple apps and with multiple users. I have given up, waiting for ATV4 to arrive.

I have had the same issue for months now.  As the original post describes, I have restored back to factory settings.  There are many instances of this occurring on 2nd Gen Apple TVs.  I do not believe this is a connection issue as some may suggest.  This is clearly either a software issue (unlikely or it would affect more folks) or a hardware issue (more likely due to a bad batch of product).  It seems as though the "simple" answer from those on the forums and/or Apple is to just restore but that is not successful.  There needs to be a deeper resolution to this issue.
