Q: Problems with mail in iOS 9

I have updated my iPad generation 4 to iOS 9. First the iPad froze when it updated to the OS, I had to press and hold down both buttons for a few seconds in order to restart the iPad.

I have now discovered that the contents of all of my email are missing, the emails are still there but they lack content, it only says  "The letter has not been downloaded from the server." The contents of the e-mail is visible the first time I open them, but the next time the content is gone.

How do I recover the contents of my email?

This works as long as you keep all your messages on the server and only and access messages while you have wifi or data. Otherwise the content is unavailable. Is this Apples way of forcing us to use iCloud?

After I reported my empty drafts (no message) and other lost content (not downloaded from server message) my pop account miraculously turned into an IMAP one and ALL my mails were just GONE, everything wiped clean.

Fiddling with the imap server settings my inbox filled again, but my Apple dealer said I  lost drafts and sent mail forever because they were stored on the iPad.

Now, how and why does it disappear and so gradually? Why can't I (or some expert) retrieve it?

At one point I could search for a word in the content of my empty mails and I got hits, so the content was still there only not visible.I'm obviously a nitwit when it comes to IT but this gradual dispappearance of content and the entire structure of my pop account, don't tell me no one can fix this?

Is it really so difficult to understand why people do not want to synchronize certain things? Now I wished my drafts folder and sent mail was.

I'm getting my inbox back stuffed with mails I previously deleted.

My MacBook isn't upgradable anymore, I'm stuck with OS 10.6.8 which isn't compatible with iOS 9. But perhaps that's not a bad thing in this case?

I would be happy to know the consequences of upgrading iOS next time (a unmistakable warning: hey, if you use POP this could happen...) and of an easy way of turning it back. By the time I had figured out how to do it, it was too late.

I must correct my last post about myMail.

At first, I thought the problem only affected mail's who was configured with a POP / SMTP account. So I installed an IMAP account on another iOS device but then the emails disappeared all together after about two days. The same thing happens when I downloaded another mail app from the AppStore, myMail, (which also use the settings in iOS 9) the mail's disappear after about two days.

So the problem affects email using email accounts that are enabled in the iOS device's Settings - email, contacts, calendars. For example, Gmail is not affected because the account is online.

I have discovered that the only way to keep my email and its contents is to move them out of the Inbox and in to a new folder that I created and named Archive. after that they have not disappear, yet.

iOS 9.1 release update. Apple insider (a great source) have published an article detailing the latest ios9.1 beta release. If you select the comments tab at the bottom of the article there is some useful discussion on this issue and likely release dates. Suggest anyone interested has a read and then continues to monitor to get the latest news on release and contributor feedback once it's been available for a few hours. My normal procedure is to monitor the comments on the release article for a few hours before upgrading to avoid any serious collateral

Here's another problem. Anyone else having this one? One day without notice, my iPhone 5c with iOS 9 can no longer send mail. I can receive, but when I try to send on my POP/IMAP accounts it tells me the sender is unverified or some such. I didn't change anything--I've had iOS 9 for a while--it was fine one day, and stopped working the n

Just adding my name to the list of people with this problem with pop emails. Let's hope 9.1 sorts it. What a fundamental thing for Apple to screw up on ......

I have this problem too. Nothing from apple on a fix and this is a BIG issue. Sick of tech companies using their customers as guinea pigs. Test the product BEFORE releasing it on all of us!

My iCloud drafts are affected niw too. If I save them in the cloud  they 'lose' their content.

On my iPhone 4S even worse: saved on my phone they disappear altogether,

I can't write and save drafts in Mail anymore

on any device. I save them in my Notes, hoping they won't vanish from there too.

The guy from the 'helpdesk' where I bought my iPad had not aware of this problem:"wait for the next update" :-(

    Add me to the list.

It happened on my 5s as soon as I "upgraded" to iOS9, and of course it's also happening on my brand new 6s.

It's as if messages turn into pumpkins after midnight -- the disappeared-messages are from "yesterday" or before, though some seem to be allowed to stick around. Re-downloading does not help. As others have found, re-starting or re-booting the phone does not help. The funny thing is that in the message-list view I can still see the preview lines!

I use POP for a reason! as do others here. It's been working for me for years right up through iOS8. I leave messages on the server until *I* delete (or move) them there.

It is super annoying, as I keep particular messages around for a reason, for reference, or even just for fun.

I hope they fix this and soon.

I submitted feedback through Apple's iPhone feedback page. I tagged it as a "bug report" since that's what it seems like to me.

I'm also busy considering workarounds, but it's a frackin' nuisance!
