Q: How do I listen without subscribing?

The article states I can listen without subscribing but when I choose a radio stream, I'm asked to join or cancel.

You misunderstand whatever article you read. The only thing free on Apple Music is the Beats1 radio station.

If you are using iTune 12.3, select Music and you should see a choice to select Radio

(you will likely need to be logged into iTunes).  Click on that and there is a variety of

choices available for you to stream, free.  At the bottom are categories and there is always several

    "canned" choices available.

In addition, if you click the three little dots next to the icons on the left of the window, at the bottom

of the drop down you will also find Internet Radio which has a large selection of music types and stations.

FWIW, you do not have to subscribe to Music to get the Apple streaming.  You will get occasional

    advertisements if you don't subscribe.

May also want to uncheck "Show Apple Music" in Preferences->General.

Only Beats 1 seems to be free, every other choice, including the categories, ask me to subscribe.

However, clicking on the three dots and selecting Internet Radio is what I was looking for.

    Thanks.
