Jul 13, 2015 8:06 AM in response to larryluby ken35806,There is NO EXCUSE for Apple's update not being compatible with iPhoto, then referring the user to a free fix that does not exist. Apple has lost its panache and I may well return to Microsoft. SHAME on Apple!

Correct, or at least you would be, if that was the case. There is an update and it works perfectly well. The assistance to find it has even been posted in this very thread about three times.

Jul 13, 2015 8:59 AM in response to ken35806by Old Toad,Photo was not deleted from your hard drive, only removed from the Dock. If you have iPhoto 9.6.1 you can still use your iPhoto library. If you don't have that version but some earlier version of 9.x try following Terence Devlin's instructions in this post to obtain iPhoto 9.6.1 from the App Store:

Re: Is Iphoto gone ? i want it back!

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash.
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.
So just follow the instructions above, get iPhoto 9.6.1 and continue using your iPhoto library.

Aug 15, 2015 11:57 AM in response to larryluby corkeeg,Here's the solution guys... iPhoto was replaced by Photos. Photos is basically the exact same thing as iPhoto, but has enhancements (more editing capabilities, etc). Go to your Finder>Applications>Photos. When you first launch photos it will ask you if you would like to import an existing library from iPhoto. Select the iPhoto library and import. Once you've imported all the pictures, you can then remove iPhoto from your system by dragging to Trash. iPhoto will no longer work on Yosemite 10.10.4 and newer.

Aug 15, 2015 12:09 PM in response to corkeegby Old Toad,That's not entirely true. The current version of Photos is missing a number or organizational functions that iPhoto has. These functions may be critical to a users image management. This User Tip illustrates the differences between Photos and iPhoto: Photos 1.5 vs iPhoto 9.6.1: Features and Capabilities
Since the Photos library does not take up additional storage space on the hard drive over what iPhoto is occupying it's wise to keep both the app and the library until one is sure Photos will do the job required.
The next version of Photos, V2, that will be released with El Capitan in the fall will include some of the missing organizational feature that it's missing now.

Aug 30, 2015 2:10 PM in response to corkeegby CSS_,I have iPhoto 9.6.4 running on Yosemite 10.10.4. As indicated earlier in this chain, the trick is to move the version of iPhoto you have (application directory only) into trash. Then go to the App Store to "install" iPhoto again. The App Store will not give you the "install" selection if it seems iPhoto in your applications directory. I just did this yesterday.

Aug 30, 2015 2:19 PM in response to CSS_by Allan Eckert,I tried your so called trick but I did not get any upgrade. My Mac still has 9.6.1 of iPhoto installed after I retrieved it from the Trash.

Aug 30, 2015 2:46 PM in response to lescornwellby Allan Eckert,I thought so.
Didn't Apple say they were dropping support on both iPhoto and Aperture like a year ago?
So how can there be new version if they dropped support?
-
Aug 30, 2015 4:20 PM in response to lescornwellby CSS_,Sorry for my confusion everyone. You are correct lescornwell. I am running iPhoto 9.6.1 on 10.10.4.

They are dropping support, but evidently they first made sure that iPhoto 9.6.1 and Aperture 3.6 were compatible with the current OSX version. I myself had no problem with Aperture, but ran into the same trap as many other here with regard to iPhoto. But meanwhile things have been fixed.

Oct 17, 2015 2:21 PM in response to larryluby JimH,Help!! I have iPhoto 9.5.3 on my iMac (10.9.5). I want to upgrade to 10.10.x which will have Photos instead of iPhoto. I want the option of keeping iPhoto but I don't seem to be able to upgrade to 9.6.1 (while still in 10.9.5). I've followed the suggestion to trash iPhoto (having saved it to a removable drive) but when I go to the App Store what installs (on Download in the screen shot below) is 9.5.3 (again). How/where can I get iPhoto 9.6.1 (or can't I)?
Thanks for the expert help

Oct 17, 2015 2:24 PM in response to JimHby Terence Devlin,You can't until you upgrade to an OS that run it - 10.10.2 I think. But definitely 10.10.

Oct 17, 2015 2:32 PM in response to larryluby JimH,In reference to the post immediately above--- Maybe I am supposed to install 10.10.x and THEN go to the App Store to upgrade iPhoto 9.5.3 to 9.6.1. Is that the procedure (rather than trying to get iPhoto 9.6.1 while still in OSX 10.9.5).
