Q: ios9 icloud backups missing information

restored my new 6s plus from my 6 plus backup on 9.01 and everything transferred fine.    backed up my 6s plus on 9.01 and did a complete software restore to 9.02.  loaded the back up and the text and imessages do not display.  also all my app that were "signed in" to services   facebook ect now required me to re-sign in.    This has never happened before.

Anyone else experience this ,  does anyone have a fix?

I'm trying this right now....and have no idea what will happen.

    1. iCloud backup from iPhone 6s that won't properly restore on an iPhone 6s.

    2. Wipe my iPhone 5s (technically I did an iCloud backup of my 5s prior and will restore from it after I'm done since the 5s is my phone and the 6s is my wifes phone)

    3. Restore iPhone 6s icloud backup backup to iPhone 5s and cross my fingers it works.

    4. Backup iPhone 5s to computer

    5. Wipe iPhone 6s

    6. Restore iPhone 6s from computer backup that was made from the iPhone 5s.

    7. Done.

Finished the above and it did not work. Did not hit the white screen with an apple logo but the messages and call history did not restore. It is strange that the call history on the iPhone 6s just randomly appeared. Even though the icloud restore completed and it was not there. I'm stumped. I wonder if they somehow fixed something which caused it to push through. Almost wondering if the same will happen with the text messages sooner or later.

Hey everyone. the issue seems to have been fixed for me.   Just created a new iCloud backup.  Restored my phone to factory and restored the latest iCloud backup and everything restored as normal.

looks like they may have fixed the issue on the server end.

Let me know if you all have the same success.

Exact same issue here, except that I'm running iOS 9.1beta5. I thought it might be a beta issue but apparently not.

I'm going crazy trying to troubleshoot in the hopes of getting back years' worth of text messages.

Have tried older backups to no avail.

Every time I restore from a backup, it freezes on the Apple logo at the end and I have to force restart. Then it says the restore was successful but Messages is empty.

If only I had a more recent backup in iTunes I could try that route, but my backups there are no less than a month old.

Going back to iOS 9.0.2 won't solve the problem because my backup is from the beta and is not compatible with previous versions.

    So super frustrating!

Thanks for that tip.  Will try it now and report back.

Today I got a replacement brand new phone with new sim card too and I did not get the white screen problem, but the restore still lacks texts, health, podcast history and call history.  I am suspicious that it may be because this new phone came with 9.0.1.

Just upgraded to 9.0.2 and will backup to iCloud then restore that same backup (as you suggest) and see what happens.

I backed up to iCloud and restored and the only improvement is that I can now see call history, but no sms data, podcast history or health data from previous restore  :-(

@jmco173  Not sure if what you meant is that you can backup and restore ok from iCloud or that you could restore original data from prior backup...

Ok. So here is where i am at currently.   It appears to me that the issue may be with iOS 9 9.01 and 9.02

i thought that it had been resolved however I realized that i am currently on 9.1 beta 5.

On 9.01 and 9.02 I was and still am experiencing the same issue.  I cloud backups created in 9.01 and 9.02  will not restore

measages data or email passwords on a 6s device running in 9.01 or .02.   Backups created in 9.1 beta 5 and restored to 9.1 beta 5 restored all data.

tthis may mean that 9.1 will fix this issue.  What I don't understand is why not everyone on a 6s or 6s plus isn't experiencing this.  Seems

    only some of us.  Strange.

Now I don't know if a backup created on 9.02 or earlier will restore correctly on a 6s on 9.1 beta.  This i can't try because i no longer have any backups created in 9.01 or .02.

IF you have a 9.02 or earlier backup and have a way to load 9.1 beta 5 And restore.  Try it and report back.

I Am still waiting on apple tech support to get back with me.   Still have an open case.

Restoring a 9.0.2 backup on 9.1 beta 5 doesn't look much better, might be worse  I didn't get hung on the white screen w/ black apple, but it did ask me to setup the phone more than once. It's still restoring, so I'll let it play out, but it looks like messages, call history, etc, are still missing. Many apps appear to be missing, but perhaps that's app-thinning or something...

@Howard the only success I have had thus far was restoring a 9.1 backup to 9.1 6s.

ANy backup created on a 6s in 9.01 or 9.02 doesnt restore correctly.

Good news is that when 9.1 is released the issues may be fixed.  The bad news is if you have data on a 9.02 backup

you may not get it all back.

Having the same issue.  The backup is defiantly corrupt.     But after you do a restore from ICloud. if you watch you memory usage under settings>general>Icloud Usage the messages app will continue to grow in size after your apps finish installing.    Kind of like its downloading the messages last.    I got fairly excited to see this and thought they would just show up when it completed.   After the fact, they did not and a day later the memory deleted.     Very frustrating.       I also upgraded to ios 9.1 and tried to restore, but no dice.

I have an open case with a senior tech advisor at apple.   Tuesday is my resolution date.

I am currently trying to restore and have all message connections severed, just to see if receiving a message or anything of the sort may have interrupted the messages restore.

Hmmm, I didn't have any luck restoring a 9.1beta5 backup to my 6s Plus—i.e. I got stuck on the white logo screen and messages/call history were all lost.

Same issue here. I've called support and they're looking into it too.

what the **** is happening here? Apple seem to be taking this issue too lightly.

As much as i love Apple, if they dont het this sorted for me by tomorrow evening, I will be seeing a solicitor, as i pay for extra storage, so its a legally binding contract, then it will be goodbye Apple

I have been testing this for days now so I thought I would make a little guide to help out.  This is what I determined through trial and error.

backup created on 6 plus (not s) iOS 9.01  ------- restored to 6s plus on 9.01 =  worked fine, all data restored including message and email passwords.

backup created on 6s plus iOS 9.02 --------- restored to same phone on 9.02 =  missing messages, email and app passwords.

backup created on 6s plus iOS 9.02  -------- restored to same phone on 9.1 beta 5 = missing messages, email and app passwords.

backup created on 6s plus iOS 9.1 beta 5 -------- restored to same phone on 9.1 beta 5 = worked fine all data restored.

Any backup created on my 6s plus on 9.02 would not restore correctly (I created many backups, not just one)  It was only after I installed 9.1 beta 5 and created a new back up would it restore correctly.   to me it seems to be an issue in 9.02 on the 6s series phones.  9.1 does at this point appear that it will fix the backup problem however those who have lost data may not get it back.

I will be staying on 9.1 beta until  final release.   Apple tech support was no help.  still have an open case,  haven't heard from them in days.  very disappointed,  I expected more from Apple.

@jmco173 and others.  Thanks for keeping this alive and for the handy summary/guide.  All my data is in a 9.02 backup unfortunately :-(  Here are other data points

    • Health App data says "no data" after a restore and does not update even though phone is used and so is apple watch.  Seems as if the DB/Data is there, but in a corrupt or locked/encrypted mode and thus the Health App does not know how to opearate
    • Restoring 9.0.2 then backing up to cloud then restoring that backup recovered call history, but not Health or SMS data, podcast history or passwords
    • The white screen lockup was resolved by swapping phone for a new one at Apple store.  I added extra variables of not setting a passcode and not using touchid during the initial setup/restore from backup so not sure if this impacts the white screen issue.

I am hoping that there is a fix to the 9.0.2 backup being "corrupt" as it has all my health (steps) data since iPhone 5s.... plus all the workouts captured by Apple watch, sleep patterns, etc...

    Thanks again for sharing.

Same issue, 6s backup to a replacement 6s and both devices are 9.0.2. Original 6s was wiped and Apple has it, so at the mercy of the my iCloud backups. I tried various icloud backups. Complete message history missing, no call history, and shared photo albums were gone. After multiple attempts the shared photo albums came back, but no Messages.  Pretty upset about losing that data, Apple support tech was lazy and actually told me "messages are no longer backed up in iOS 9 with iCloud backups", and that Apples support article that states they are "hasn't been updated". What a crock!

    Description:

    1. My new 6s was replaced yesterday at Apple Store, iCloud backup successfully completed prior to swap.

    2. I knew that the replacement phone probably didn't have 9.0.2, which my original phone was on.  So setup replacement as new iPhone, updated to 9.0.2, and then erased all.

    3. Restored iPhone from iCloud backup, after initial progress bar for the restore completes the phone restarts and sits at a white screen with the Apple logo.  It never progresses past this point on its own, left it overnight last night just to make sure it wasn't just time. Have to hold down sleep button to turn off phone, then turn back on and the restore proceeds after that. (I have tried this 4 times now)

    4. Phone will restore all apps, settings, but all Messages/SMS are gone. During the restore process I can go into the storage settings and see that Messages are using 1.5GB of data, but by the end of the restore it is reduced to 21.0MB.

    5. I am at the mercy of my iCloud backup

I have not tried going back to 9.0 or 9.0.1 yet, but am pretty upset that my backup from my original phone to replacement phone is having this problem.  When I upgraded to the 6s from my 6, the iCloud restore worked like it is supposed to. I will try downgrading to 9.0 and seeing if the restore works. I don't have a local iTunes backup unfortunately, the swap was done at a store that isn't near my house so couldn't make the iTunes backup beforehand. (Can't do this, Apple only signing 9.0.2 now, can't try a previous iOS)
