Q: wifi problem

I have my own WIFI network, it keeps getting overridied,by an unlocked linksys network, when I go to my WIFI advanced settings it is greyed out

so I don't know how I can delete this? also on the list of Wifi is an old one I used to have I don't have now, is there anyway to fix this, why would

another network be stronger than mine? Please advise what I can do. If it matters I have a mid 2012 macbook pro, OS X Yosemite 10.10.5 and

Safari 9.0   thanks for any help.

MacBook Pro, iOS 6.1.5

    Hi catherine281,

I'm sorry to hear you are having these issues with your Wifi connection. I also apologize, I'm a bit unclear on a couple things you were describing; it may help to clarify a couple things so we know better exactly what you are experiencing:

    1. What exactly do you mean when you say that your network is being overridden? What exactly are you seeing when this happens?

    2. How do you currently have your WiFi network set up? What kind of router are you using? Where is your router located and what kind of building are you in?

    3. If you use Scan function in the Additional Utilities portion of Wireless Diagnostics (detailed below), what exactly do you see in terms of local networks (how many, signal strength, etc)?

    Scan

Wi-Fi Scanning examines the Wi-Fi environment around you, and lets you know about nearby Wi-Fi routers. It includes information on the Network name, Password Security type, Protocol, Signal Strength and Noise, and the Channel, Band, and Country the router is designed for.

Use Wireless Diagnostics to help you resolve Wi-Fi issues on your Mac - Apple Support

    Regards

Thanks for your reply brenden. I will try the diagnostics.

Maybe I didn't explain very well, under WIFI the check mark is always on linksys, I have to keep putting it on my own. I'm not sure what kind of router

I have, the internet company hooked it up, it belongs to them. The router is only about 10 feet from where I use my laptop. In advanced settings, I'd like to know why where it says to drag networks in oder of preference, it is greyed out so I can't.

    Hi Catherine.

Can you select the Linksys network and delete it?

    Hi Catherine.

When you are in the networks system prefence, click on advanced.

    Select the wif-fi tab.

Highlight the Linksys network then click on the - sign to delete it.

You might have to switch to your own wi-fi network first. Perhaps you can't delete it while connected to it.

The problem is it is greyed out, so I can't do that. I can barely see the list.

Catherine, do you have more than login account on your Mac? If so, ensure that you are using an admin account. Check the users & groups system preference.

    Hi Catherine,

When you have selected the Network preference pane, do you see a small padlock icon in the lower right? It may be in the locked position, which would prevent you from interacting with the pane.

If it is in the locked position, click on the padlock and enter your admin user name and password (the name and password you use to log in to your computer), and that will allow you to access the Advanced button.

Thanks, I managed to drag mine to the top and I deleted a few, hopefully it works.
