Q: I cannot open or update iPhoto

I have a MacBook pro running Yosemite. The app store says I have an update for iPhoto, but it won't download and I can't open iPhoto because there's a pop up that says it's not compatible. How do I fix this?!

If you are running MacOS X 10.10.3 Yosemite or later, you need to update to iPhoto 9.6.1.

Updating does not work. The only way to install the update is to reinstall from the Purchases tab. To be able to reinstall, iPhoto needs to be showing on the Purchases tab of the AppStore with in "Install" button and not an "Update" button.  Move any incompatible version of iPhoto you have installed to the Trash (but don't empty the Trash),  and then open the fourth ab of the appStore, Purchases.  Enter the key combination ⌘R to relaod the tab. Does it now show "Install" to the right of iPhoto? Then click it.

Thank you. I tried this and even after signing out, quitting and going back into the App Store, it still says "update" and it doesn't work.

NOTE: the key to getting iPhoto 9.6.1 from the App Store  is to move the existing version of iPhoto 9 to the Trash bin in the Dock (don't empty yet) before going to the App Store.

Yes - I did that. And I still only see "update" in the app store. Which doesn't work. Is there another step I need to do?

The step that got the "install" to show up for iPhoto was to restart the computer. But I was able to reinstall iPhoto 9.6.1 after that. Thanks.
