Q: Can't use iCloud keychain due to lost phone number

Hi there,

i can't enable Keychain in iCloud Preferences because it keeps asking me for verification with my old phone number which i have lost access to because i was hospitalised for 6 months last year and my phone subscription expired. i have tried calling my old number and it turns out it was re-listed for sale and now has been registered to a new user.

How do i remove the old phone number from Keychain preferences without access to it?

Also, i don't remember my Keychain code as well so please tell me how to reset it.

Thank you! :)

    Hi the_gods_are_cruel,

Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities.

It sounds like you're trying to enable iCloud Keychain on your Mac but you don't have access to the phone you used for verification or to reset your iCloud Security Code.

If so, you can reset iCloud Keychain and create a new Code using these steps from If you enter your iCloud Security Code incorrectly too many times:

If you can't access a device that uses your iCloud Keychain

Follow these steps to reset your iCloud Keychain.

On a Mac using OS X Yosemite or later:

    1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences.
    2. Click iCloud, then select Keychain. You might be asked to enter your Apple ID password.
    3. Click Use Code, then choose Forgot Code when you're asked to enter your iCloud Security Code.
    4. Click Reset Keychain to replace your keychain in iCloud with the iCloud Keychain from your device.
      Reset Keychain
    5. Click Reset iCloud Keychain to confirm.
    6. Follow the onscreen steps to create a new iCloud Security Code.

    Sincerely.
