Q: El Capitan won't Boot after update

I installed  El Capitan and it was booting fine. Then I installed the latest update and after the restart, the Mac loads the Apple logo and then screen goes white and it just freezes there. I tried restarting holding shift to log into safe mode and it remains white. I've even held down command and R to get the recovery mode to load.  I see are the boot options but when I select one, I just goes into a white screen.

    I Am trying to do this but my Mac is saying that it cannot find sudo. Is there something I need to change from the code? The shell is Bash$32

    Update!

     

    My old version worked GREAT! since the update i am unable to reboot my computer !!

     

    I HAVE SO FAR DONE THE FOLLOWING:

     

    Tried everything posted on this topic with no joy.

    I decided to connected USB memory stick and load Capitan and run from my USB stick.

    I erased my 3TB hard drive and then completed a new install followed by time capsule. (took 2 days)

     

    TEST!

    After everything loaded i then turn the my computer off, waited a few minutes and turn the computer back on!

     

    DID IT WORK!

    NO! ! still the same ! cannot reboot my computer with loading the OS X again and again and again !

    After having the same problems, I followed the fix described below to the point.

    It helped to update my Late 2011 MacBookPro from Mac OS 10.7.5 to El Capitan!

    After initial boot problems, following this recommended fix in "Terminal", the update worked fine without loss of any files and data.

    I am really unexperienced, never used terminal before. But everything worked fine. Just follow the instruction.

    For me it was very easy, because my hard disk name was still "Macintosh HD".

     

    I really can recommend to give this fix a try.

    I wonder why Apples support team is not reacting to all the problems of the El Capitan Update.

    Email this code to yourself, but change the machine name to YOUR EXACT(!) HardDisk-name.

    Boot in Restore mode.

    Click OS help and Safari will open

    Open your email and copy the code

    Quit Safari and open Terminal from the top menu

    Paste the code and hit return.

    Give it a minute or two. When it is done you will then be able to quit Terminal.

     

    Restart. Be patient, restart does not begin immediately, and in 20-30 seconds

    I have an early 2015 Macbook Pro Retina 13.  I have FileVault turned on, updated to El Capitan, and now the following happens:

     

    1) Booting is very slow.

    2) When the password prompt comes up, the mouse moves very slowly and I cannot enter my password.  Only one or two characters will be entered.  After a while, it gives the message that I can hold down the power button to enter recovery mode.

    3) When I hold down the power button, the computer turns off.  Turning it back on, it enters the recovery mode, and then

    when I restart it will boot normally and I can fully use the machine.  Then if I cold shutdown and restart, the cycle repeats again.

     

    I tried checking the disk with Disk Utility and it says everything is OK.

     

    I am turning off FileVault for now.  So I think that El Capitan booting is buggy.

    What the **** did apple test before releasing El Capitan?

    apple's reaction to the reported problem is disappointing - just nothing!

    Firstly a big thank you to all the people who have managed to figure this out.

    Secondly a massive ***? to Apple for what seems like a fundamental upgrade bug.

     

    So here's what happened and what worked.

     

    As per post, after upgrading to ElCrapitan and shutting down my iMac (Late 2009 27" with 16GB RAM) froze on the apple logo screen - no movement on the progress bar. Panic and tears ensued!

     

    Googled problem on my phone and found this thread (amongst others) - wiped away tears while sniffing.

     

    First attempt was to re-install ElCrapitan

     

    • CMD-R during boot
    • then re-connected to Wi-Fi
    • clicked on install OSX
    • follow on screen instructions

     

    This works but doesn't solve the problem since it will freeze every time you boot up again - note that putting the Mac to Sleep is OK

     

    Second attempt (after reinstalling the OS):

     

    • Login as normal
    • Open Terminal Window
    • sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/EltimaAsync.kext
    • Enter password and hit enter (note that there is no indication that the file has been removed or that you have entered your password after you hit enter)
    • Went to the Extensions folder in Finder - no sign of the offending article
    • Crossed everything and shut down
    • Started up and it worked!
    • Do a small hornpipe in the living room and bask in the reflected glow of others total geekiness

     

    Finally, from what I gather from other posts here, if you have the problem and are in the CMD-R boot mode instead of re-installing you can try

     

    • Open terminal window from CMD-R boot
    • cd /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/System/Library/Extensions (where Macintosh\ HD is your drive name - the '\' is needed for terminal to identify the space)
    • rm -rf EltimaAsync.kext

     

    I haven't tried this.

    I have rebooted Twice seems to be working.   Now! Thanks!

    I must mention the first time I had this problem I did renamed my hard drives. It worked

    fine for about a day before it returned back. So opened minded at the moment..


    After doing the above Copy & Past All seems to be working.

    im just completing a new Time Capsule Save once done I will test again..

    AS to Apple Support!  Very little I will say... Maybe R&D support do not know how to resolve this issue!

    Seems Apple R&D can only improve by waiting for others to resolve this ..

    Mine is MacBook Pro 15-inch, Early 2011, and I have Mac 2011 Office upgraded to 14.5.7, and other applications including Safari browser (I have no other browser) upgraded by clicking the installed applications and checking their websites one by one. I checked to ensure no more Apple Store upgrade.

    I also have FireVault off.

    But after installed El Capitan, at the first boot up after first power shut down, I still got the same problem of grey screen with no progress in progress bar.

    Apple Store could not solve the problem except asked me either to clean install or to wait for El Capitan patches or other applications upgrade gradually.

     

    I tried to boot up in Startup Manager (Option + Power on) but after I selected my only hard disk, it did not work to boot into El Capitan.


    Today I tried again to boot up in Command R to look for any more clues.

    After choosing language, in the next screen, I clicked the top left Apple logo to bring up Startup Disk.

    In the screen shown, I selected my only hard disk shown once, then I clicked the top left menu to Quit Startup Disk.

    It took a short while before the top menu changed to show Language Chooser.

    I clicked Shut Down instead.

    After a few minutes, I boot up the Macbook normally and it could log into El Capitan and now everything is smooth.

     

    As there is no file to remove or no tweaks or terminal command to make, see if others have similar issue can try your luck this way.

    Our Apple user group in Northern California is recommending waiting a few months before upgrading systems or buying devices with the new systems installed. not waiting may mean regrets. One member suggested 8 months!

    Think Apple should wait an additional 8 months before rushing and offering..

     

    Maybe the 8 months will give them more time to test the software.

     

    Should not! be down to us. Should be a BETA version first! ..  I never load Beta version...

     

    Not saying things will be perfect, but something like not being able to boot your computer should

     

    have been flagged up before offering us. What do you think?

    I didn't use the terminal in my case, but deleting the file EltimaAsync.kext did fix the issue. I deleted it after a successful re-install of EC and before trying to reboot or logoff.
