Q: How do I edit Final Cut Pro 7 timelines in FCPX?

My video editor handed me all of the original Final Cut Pro 7 files he has been working on for years so I can do some editing myself.  I don't have FCP, so I downloaded Final Cut Pro X from the Apple Store only to learn right afterwards that I could not load any of the timelines/projects.  What do I do?

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11)

The FCP-7 editor needs to export XML files, using their copy of FCP-7, and send those files and the media they are working with to you.

Then you need to use the app 7 to X:

to convert those files into something FCP- X can read.

Make sure you read through the 7 to X web site  as XML is a very terse format and may not pass everything that was done to the edit in FCP-7.

Thank you for the feedback.  The problem is that I have all of the original drives and my editor is out of the country. So, I need to figure out a way to work with the files I have.  Is there another solution short of having to buy FCP7 for another few hundred dollars (it's even more expensive than FCPX)?   Can I convert to XML without FCP7?

No, you must open the FCP- 7 project files in FCP-7 and do the xml export.

You won't need to load the media on the machine with FCP-7, just the project files.

If someone you know has FCP-7, they will be able to do this for you and hand you the xml files to convert.
