Oct 19, 2015 4:01 PM in response to Pehamaby ChitlinsCC,★HelpfulI think I may be misunderstanding your method of "... trying to open the iphoto ..." - tell us the Story of what exact steps you are taking, in detail
iPhoto is not "gone" (still in your "Applications" folder) - but all the file associations of individual files have been pointed to Photos (supposedly)
while answering with your Story, and waiting for any response, have a look at this article > Get started with Photos for OS X - Apple Support

Oct 18, 2015 9:16 AM in response to Pehamaby Terence Devlin,1 Either update iphoto to the latest version
or
2. Use Photos.app that came with El Capitan
To update iPhoto:
Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
****
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

Oct 19, 2015 4:03 PM in response to Terence Devlinby Pehama,Thank you, the iPhoto app is not available in the app store -I go the message: item is temporarily not available, try later. Anyway, Photo seems to work now. Much appreciated.

That is a bogus message you receive, when you try to update. You need to reinstall instead of update as TD described.
it will only work, when you move the incompatible iPhoto application from the Applications folder to the Trash, don't empty the Trash, thenrestart the App Store. Now your iPhoto version in the Purchases history (the fourth tab of the appStore) should show "Install" instead of "Update".

Oct 19, 2015 4:19 PM in response to Pehamaby ChitlinsCC,Great. (Out of habit, I have always used the Finder and my "way" of organizing my files - iPhoto and Photos seem to be stubborn about letting me do that, so I don't actually use them) I am sure you will locate the strays and bring them back into the herd.
buenos noches
