Q: newbie needs help

I have never owned an Apple product before so am new to it all, I have been given an Ipod touch 4g, I cannot get any apps or games to install, says I need ios7 I understand the 4g doesn't support ios7 but can you download older versions of apps such as youtube that must have once worked on the 4g.
