Q: Etrecheck results before upgrading to El Capitan

Hello,

Etrecheck found these problems (under Yosemite):

System Launch Agents:

    [loaded]    com.apple.servernotifyd.plist - /System/Library/Frameworks/ServerNotification.framework/Resources/servernotifyd : Executable not found!

Other Apps:

   [running]    com.apple.iWork.Pages.18776 - Invalid signature!

    [running]    com.apple.photostream-agent - com.apple.photostream-agent: Executable not found!

How can this be? What shall I do before upgrading to El Capitan?

Many thanks.

What shall I do before upgrading to El Capitan?

    1. Quit "etrecheck" if it's running, drag it to the Trash, and empty.

    2. Back up all data and be prepared to restore if you don't like the results of the upgrade.

    3. Preferably, copy the startup volume to an external drive, upgrade that, and boot from it. Then if you don't like the upgrade, all you have to do is reboot.

    Thank you for your answer.

If possible I would prefer to fix the problems which  Etrecheck found under Yosemite

before upgrading to El Capitan, so that the chance of a successful upgrade is

as good as possible. Is there no way do fix this?

    Hello coxorange,

EtreCheck is designed to display a snapshot of the entire state of your machine in one report. Any particular red entry may not have any meaning. Issues that are likely to cause problems may not show up in red at all.

These particular red entries seem to be harmless. EtreCheck includes a list of known Apple failures, but these items are not on that list. I have seen them on other EtreCheck reports. They never appeared on my machine and that is why they are showing up in red now.

El Capitan is quite similar to Yosemite. If you are happy with Yosemite on your machine, then El Capitan should run fine. If you are not happy with Yosemite, then El Capitan will only make things worse. I strongly advise a backup before the upgrade.

Do you have a functional problem? The "etrecheck" stuff is irrelevant.

Your continued bashing of etrecheck is irrelevant. It's a useful tool that gives participants here a very good overall snapshot of what's going on and potentially causing problems on the machines of those coming here seeking help.

Yes, it seems that I don't have a problem under Yosemite.

I only wondered why executables can't be found. Shouldn't they be there?

And I can't understand why Pages has an Invalid signature problem.

    Could that cause any harm?

    Hello again coxorange,

Then you should be fine. Just remember, it is a .0 release. Those are always fun. Did I mention a backup?

I only wondered why executables can't be found. Shouldn't they be there?

Yes. They should. This seems to be part of an OS X Server installation that is somehow corrupt now. Having the config script there without the matching executable won't cause any problems. It will just keep displaying red entry in EtreCheck. El Capitan does some funky things with these system directories. I have no idea what will happen with this file when you upgrade. Have I already mentioned a backup?

And I can't understand why Pages has an Invalid signature problem.

As far as I can tell, you seem to have an old version of EtreCheck. That's another reason why you should post the whole report. I relaxed the Apple signature checking in the most recent version of EtreCheck. It looks like Pages is an app that might not report this failure anymore.

There are a number of Apple apps that have invalid or missing signatures. Due to the dynamic nature of the system, it is not really possible for me to find them all. The ones that I have found and confirmed as expected are flagged and will not be reported unless you turn off the EtreCheck option to hide known Apple failures.

Invalid signatures won't case any harm. This is a new feature of EtreCheck and may take some time before it settles down. But I admit that I am surprised at how many apps Apple ships that do have invalid or missing signatures. There was recently a significant malware infestation in Apple's iOS App store due to a hacked version of Xcode. This new feature in EtreCheck is designed to detect such problems.
