Q: Windows Partition Turned Into DISK0S4 After Resizing Macintosh HD Disk

One day I decided to re-orden everything on my windows partition and when doing that I'd noticed that my amount of space was getting smaller. I had recently watched a tutorial about resizing your windows partition without having to format your hard disk. I had done this once before and it did the trick. So knowing that I decided to do it again , but this time when I restarted my Imac and went to the disk utility on Macintosh , I noticed a little amount of space between Macintosh HD and Windows that I had never seen before. So I resized Macintosh HD and I got a message saying that Macintosh HD would be increased and no disks would be formatted. So I continued and restarted my Mac to switch back to windows , pressed the alt key and the windows partition was gone.

I would do anything to get it back and would love some advice or any help. If someone knows the job can't be done please tell me but I really hope someone knows how to fix this because I have many important files on that partition. All of my schoolwork/music projects/office files are in risk or lost forever.

I have tried to re-install with windows cd or repair it , but with re-installing I pressed quit because I was to scared it would overwrite my existing windows files , but now I do have a windows disk appearing in the begin screen but when I click on it , it just ask to press any button to boot from cd..... witch works with the windows cd in my pc but just leads to a new installation and with windows repair I need to have an image file with i don't .

PLEASE HELP I REALLY NEED THIS

PS English is not my first language, Sorry If any mistakes made

Greetz

    1. This is just a hunch, before we start digging further...

    sudo dd if=/dev/rdisk0s3 count=1 2>/dev/null | hexdump -C

    2. Have there been any recent Software Updates recently on your Mac?

    3. You may need to download Testdisk and start a scan. Can you use El Capitan has deleted my bootcamp windows partition as a reference and run a scan. The first couple of posts by Biggles293 are the initial Testdisk screens, which should help you get started. You want to run a Quick Search first, before we go diving further. Deeper Search can take several hours.

    4. When do you want this available, tomorrow morning your time (assuming you are in Netherlands)?

    2. Yes a couple of weeks ago I think I did an Update from 9.0.1. to 9.0.2.

    3. Yes I have red about Testdisk on a forum where you helped also from a year ago. I have installed it already. Couldn't figure a lot out in that program , did a quick search got a green marked ' BOOT ' at the end of a MSdata if i got it right , but that is irrelevant because I will send you the pictures so you can see yourself.

    4. It's already morning here 05:15 AM , I will be available every moment ,  If you can tell me how soon this can be done(fitting your schedule) I really don't care which time I have available for you because I have 2 or 3 days off study but I need to get my work done as well.

Not so much now, I leave it for you to wiggle a way out.

The partition table does not look good. Hopefully, I can help the 'Young" man salvage something. Jobs ate my homework would be a very poor excuse.

You have the patience required to deploy the knowledge. I'm the abrupt type, slash and burn gets you there, but the journey can be unsettling.

When this is done and all is good again you can expect a short sharp piece from me about backup. But it will be well intentioned

Since you have not started a Deeper Search, can you quit from Testdisk, run it again, but choose /dev/rdisk0 instead of dev/disk0. The Quick Search should look the same, but the Deeper Search should provide a bit more insight.

The screen which shows unrecoverable partitions is mostly a product of the disk addresses being invalid. The message about the disk being too small indicates that the partition is beyond the physical boundaries of the disk.

Can you select one of the entries and run Deeper Search? It can take a while to run a Deeper Search.

    Here is an example - http://imgur.com/a/PjmnK .

This is a table using a reverse calculation.

    DavidLeoYoung-ntfs-reverse.png

Assuming the NTFS size and the end is correct, I calculated the start address. If I use the start address and check how far in size it is the Recovery HD, it is about 50MB. When the resizing was done, the Recovery HD is automatically moved, part of this move overwrote the NTFS header.

I want to check what is close to this offset on the disk. This is somewhere in your Recovery HD. Let Testdisk continue, and run the following from a new Terminal window.

Can you post the output of

    sudo dd if=/dev/rdisk0s3 skip=1169534 count=5 2>/dev/null | hexdump -C

The only ones I can select with a quick search on the first disk ' /dev/disk0 '  are these

    Schermafbeelding 2015-10-20 om 06.32.14.png

And doing a quick search on the other disk ' /dev/rdisk0 ' i get these

Pick any one and press Enter. Do you see a Deeper Search? Did you get a chance to run the DD command?
