Q: missing smtp outgoing mail servers

Hi,

Something very strange happened today...in the morning I used Mail.app like normal and in the afternoon I could no longer send any emails because all of my outgoing servers were missing.  I had maybe 10 of them?  I don't recall anything happening that could cause this and certainly I didn't go through manually and delete them all one by one or anything like that.  So what I did is I restored from a SuperDuper! clone that was from the previous night and even after restore they are still missing!  One more oddity, I also received a message from Mail telling me my Outbox had been renamed to Delivered because it already exists or something to that effect, I'm not able to reproduce it at this time...

Any ideas?  Thanks in advance,

rc

So, I found this problem yesterday having just upgraded to OS X El Capitan 10.11, or it could have been due to installing MS Office 2016, I may never know.

I am running a 2014 iMac and suddenly found that I could no longer send emails from my iCloud account.

The error message stated that, "This message could not be sent because your account does not have a preferred outgoing mail server. Select an outgoing mail server from the list below." and then included relevant links.

I did recover my Accounts.plist file from ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/ but that did not fix the issue.

    The following worked for me:

    1. Closed Mail
    2. Opened System Preferences > Internet Accounts
    3. Selected iCloud
    4. Unchecked Mail
    5. Rechecked Mail

When I reopened Mail I could resend emails again.

Took a bit but here is the solution: When you get the error message, click on Connection Doctor.

    Same issue this morning.

My antivirus program Sophos found a  Mal/Zbot-FG  virus and moved it to the trash.

I don't know if that has anything to do with losing our outgoing mail servers.

However, all of us are probably using passwords for the outgoing mail servers that someone would love to get their hands on.

I reported this to Apple feedback if there is something not secure here that some malware is trying to get access to.

Regardless, hopefully they will fix this.

Yeah, I've had this issue twice now in El Capitan.  Initially "iCloud" isn't listed, but when I follow the steps you provided, it's there again and I can choose as my smtp server.

This worked for me but I also had to go in and edit the mailbox and re-select iCloud as the outgoing server since it had automatically selected my gmail account.

After installing El Capitan had same issue--used this and worked fine.  Was clearly a bug un installation package of the upgrade--how frustrating!

    Hi,

I've been beating myself over this this morning too!

In the end I went into my Mail Preferences /Accounts/Advanced

There I found that my Authentication was blank.

I chose the regular default of 'Password' put this back in - and everything is back to normal.

Love it when a plan comes together.

Thanks, @shawzhang, just what I needed. Time Machine to the rescue! This is the second time this has happened, also noticed that my Finder sidebar favorites were reset.
