Q: airplay icon disappears

Since upgrading to El Capitan, I keep noticing my AirPlay menu bar icon will blink out and reappear. Anyone else?

Thoughts on why or how to get it to stay put?!

I've been in touch with Apple over this and still not resolved. I'm using a Mac Airport Extreme at home.

I don't have an issue at my office and where I have two Apple TVs and while on wifi, never see the icon disappear.

When I get home is the only place this is happening. Usually blinking out once or twice a minute. A restart seems to help. When its blinking out, if I try to connect I've gotten both screens to come up black and no way to exit out, had to force restart the MacBook Pro. After a restart, I was able to airplay to my AppleTV and stay connected without it dropping out. When I've gotten the icon to be stable, closing the laptop/sleeping seemed to start the problem again.

With zero replies...just posting to share my own fix.

Buying a 4th Gen Apple TV fixed my issue. While I have 3rd and 2nd Gens at the office, and I had a 3rd Gen at home, just swapping out the AppleTV at home made the disappearing Airplay icon come back to stay. So in the end, seems to have been something buggy with that and not my laptop.

This is happening to me on my iMac, but I have AirPlay set to off and that seems to be the only option. I don't have any devices to use AirPlay with. I tried unchecking "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available" hoping that would fix the icon from appearing and disappearing, but nope. It shows up for maybe a minute or two and then disappears, for a few minutes.

My Airplay worked a week ago 01/21/16  from my Mid 2009 Mac running OS X V10.9.5 to my Apple TV Model A1469 Software Ver7.2.  I go to use it today 01/28/16 and now it suddenly has disappeared from my Mac and no where to be found on my system after an Apple update.

I see the most recent requirements are now owning a iMac 2011 or later for it to work?

I've attempted every step / resolution I've found in Apple Support and other forums to no avail.

Apple has basically stolen from me a feature I paid for with my Mac and have used for years. To have it working fine for 6 years and then have it just be taken away. With an Apple update and access to my system?  It's fraudulent!

Does anyone know this issue / resolution?
