Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It is my understanding you want to use TDM but you do not have a FireWire port or Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt port. I would recommend you read these articles, they should be helpful for your issue.
Share files between two computers with target disk mode - Apple Support
Use your iMac as a display with Target Display Mode - Apple Support
You need the following to use Target Display Mode:
- A Mac notebook or desktop with a Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt port
- A Thunderbolt cable or a Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable
Have a nice day

Oct 20, 2015 7:27 PM in response to mario49by pasaC,Hi Mario49,
Thanks for replying, but those points mainly deal with display mode, not disk mode, the point I'm trying to clarify is the following:
Can a mac air be connect using a usb2 to ethernet adaptor, then an ethernet to thunder bolt adaptor to an iMac? Can you access target disk mode if the Mac air only has usb 2 on its end as an access point or are there certain limits on what processing (?) speed / transfer capabilities are required do to Target Disk Mode.
The article 'Share files between two computers with target disk mode - Apple Support' states to use firewater or thunderbolt cables, so I need to find out if other forms of cables with the various connectors / adaptors will work just well (or even at all) as a straight thunder bolt to thunder bolt connection would.
Normally I would just go and buy the cables and see if it worked myself, but i am currently in Turkey and it is not so easy to find those items over here, plus they are about 4x the price in the US and the only Apple store is 13 hours drive from where I am staying.
thanks!
