Q: Need to reset password without wiping everything

I have put a 'restrictions' password on my sons iPad and made it something he wouldn't be able to work out....except now I can't remember what it is!

I know I can do a 'recovery' but I have 2 issues with that.1) I can't turn off the 'find my iPad' function in which is needed to undertake recovery and 2) I really, really don't want to lose all of the data/games if I put it into recovery mode (I know its not the end of the world, but to my 13 year old it will be).

Does anyone have any suggestions to get this protective mum out of big trouble!!??

Thanks

iPad Air Wi-Fi, iOS 8.4.1

The only way to remove the restrictions passcode is either to remember it, or restore the device as new. A backup contains the passcode, so if you were to restore from a backup, it would just put the restrictions passcode back on the device. There is no alternative to this. Why can you not turn off Find My iPhone? That is separate from the Restrictions passcode. That is your iCloud ID and password.

You can turn off Find My iPhone by logging into iCloud.com from your computer and removing it from there. There is, however, no way around restoring the iPad to remove the restrictions passcode.
