Thanks for advice but the fix was temporary the problem returned. All we can do is pester Apple until they fix it. I found just hitting return until you see your text was a sort of solution but made some odd shaped text boxes !

This happened to me after accidentally pressing the the little microphone icon for voice to text on the right of the text box. I closed it by holding the microphone icon then clicking x to the left when it appears. Someone earlier spoke of going into settings, messages, scrolling to bottom and shutting it off; but that didn't get the gray box gone.

After shutting the voice to text off it has not come back.

A Level 7 person in another thread said this:

    Go to Settings>Messages.

    Scroll down to the bottom.

In Audio Messages, turn off Raise to Listen.

And, just for the record, everyone (not to you Bob0001):  THERE IS NO "9.1" OR "9.2" UPDATES.  The latest iOS update was 9.0.2.

    I believe they meant 9.0.1 and 9.0.2.

iOS 9.1 hadn't been released at the time they had posted their messages. A simple error, and not really critical, but could cause confusion.

9.1 has come out now, with likely some new bugs that will need fixing. The only one I'm still waiting on is the email issue with POP and IMAP emails missing content, some are also lost forever. I would recommend NO ONE delete emails from the server unless they are emails you really will never want to read again. Sadly, some have lost emails they thought were stored on their iOS devices after deleting them from the server. I never delete mine, but I also can't read many unless I'm connected to WiFi.

Oh, and iOS 9.2 is currently in beta testing.

Another poster on another thread said to turn on Character Count in the Messages setting area. After doing this, the problem has not returned for me at all.
