Have you tried, as a test, launching iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Try importing some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?
You memory usage isn't showing memory issues but more memory can always help.
What version of iPhoto are your running? If it's not iPhoto 9.6.1 see if you can get it from the App Store.

Sep 18, 2015 11:22 AM in response to Old Toadby tzero,Thanks, Old Toad. I hadn't tried that but I will. My iPhotos library (on whatever the very latest version of iPhoto is) was a referenced library, which was becoming problematic as a way to store photos. (Easy for me to maintain, if I followed the proper workflow, but impossible for my spouse and kids to interact with.) So I figured I'd start brand-new with Photos, which seemed like an improvement until I signed up for iCloud Library. Maybe it's just a matter of waiting out the syncing process, though no idea how long that could take ...

Sep 25, 2015 3:48 AM in response to Old Toadby Matty_B,Hi OT, I hope you can help me. When I plug in my iPhone 6 Plus into my iMac, Photos will recognise the phone and start to process the photos that are on there. It identifies the new photos to be uploaded but then spends literally hours trying to load the thumbnails. Except the thumbnails never appear as images, just a grey box. If i try and hit import new items, it never actually starts downloading. I then cannot Cancel the import and need to force quit to get out of the app. Here is my EtreCheck results

Sep 25, 2015 9:00 AM in response to Matty_Bby Old Toad,Photos app won’t download from iPhone 6 Plus
Your problem is not the same as the user who started this topic. I suggest you start your own topic with this Etrecheck report and any other info, i.e. system used, where library is located, available free space on boot drive,
Being at the end of a 10+ page topic won't get you the foot traffic thru the topic that you're normally get with your own topic.

Oct 21, 2015 2:21 AM in response to Old Toadby lescornwell,Old Toad, I hope I can ask my question here. Ever since I read about Etrecheck, I have been using it, and recommending others to use it as well.
With the upgrade from 10.10.5 to 10.11 (El Capitan), there were a few incompatible things; but one thing I also had to do was download and reinstall Java, specifically for Adobe CS5. Although I also use CS6, I still have CS5 up and running, e.g., for testing purposes.
Well... when I now run Etrecheck, I get a clean bill, except for this line:
System Launch Agents: (What does this mean?)
[loaded] com.apple.java.InstallOnDemand.plist - Invalid signature!
Do you know if I can somehow repair this, or should I not worry about the message at all?

Oct 21, 2015 2:21 AM in response to BoGenaby petermac87,Google Chrome seems to be a culprit. Uninstall it and reinstall the latest version from new. Might help. Also try turning off Extensions in Safari. Seem to be a few that do nothing but cause issues. You can turn them on one by one if needed until you find and resource hogs, and then uninstall those particular ones.
Cheers
Pete
