Q: OS X EL Capitan Indesign CS6 problem

CS6 and 10.11 have not been claimed by Adobe to be compatible at this time.

Some here have claimed to be able to use CS6 in 10.11 without incident, others haven't.

What you can try is

a) launch the InDesign application from the applications folder (this will not work on a shortcut or the dock icon) while holding down SHIFT+CTRL+OPT+CMD

this will reset the preferences

b) try using the application from a newly created account that has administrative rights

c) reinstall the CS6 package and if the application asks for JAVA use this version:

Java for OS X 2015-001

d) roll back to an instance of your computer where the OS and the Application were stable if you have a time machine backup of that point in time.

is your response to say "it worked" or "still does not work"?

your first post says you can't Undo more than twice, your second post say Illustrator won't open.

have you tried any of the other 3 suggestions I posted?

for my clarification you only did the Java install and that fixed it?

I've been holding off with El Capitan due to these incompatibility issues with CS6, and have been waiting for Appple to issue at least one El Capitan update before I proceed. A question: if I install the Java for OS X 2015-001 version, does this compromise my security of other applications using Java, such as Safari? Is this an older version of Java that never gets updated for security fixes?

All Java is sketchy, but if you want to use CS6 or earlier on 10.11 this appears to be the necessary version to be installed in order for that to happen. If you are waiting for an update from Adobe or Apple for compatibility neither company has suggested one is forthcoming. Adobes stance is buy a monthly subscription to CC2015 because if you can pay for software more than once it works for them. They don't make open source software and don't appear to be filled with a wonderful sense of well being by giving away anything for free. CS6 is years past it's development and update legitimacy, and if I ventured a guess as far as Adobe is concerned, it's not worth supporting if they already have something else they want to sell you - sell being the wrong word, they rent you software now it's far more lucrative, you're investing money into nothing you can keep.

If your browsing habits are responsible then at this time there is far less to be concerned with about Java than if you tend to frequent sites that are notoriously unsafe or unscrupulous or "questionably legal" in their content.

Jimmy - I agree with your anti Adobe rant, but that really didn't answer my question. This discussion on Macupdate suggests to "Go to /Library/Internet Plug-Ins and Remove from this directory everything listed as 'Java'."

This removes Java from being accessed via the web, but lets CS6 have access to the Java version it needs.

Questions:

1) Has anyone on this forum using El Capitan tried this and found that this works?

2) Could you download the most current version of Java for use with Internet Plug-Ins, and have the version needed for CS6 everywhere else; or are there problems with this approach?

I had the same issues.

Installing the java update didn’t help at all,

but resetting the prefs as described did the

trick.

It’s back to normal now / for now?

I am using InDesign CS6 ver 8.0 on Mac OS 10.11.4 El Capitan. For a while I was finding I had severely limited “Undo” history. I deleted the “InDesign SavedData” file in the following location: /Users/... /Library/Caches/Adobe InDesign/Version 8.0/en_GB/InDesign SavedData

The Adobe InDesign folder is hidden within the Caches folder. To view it, the easiest solution was clicking on the Go menu in finder then holding down the alt (option key). This brings up the option to click on Library and hidden folders are now displayed.

I was delighted to find an apparently restored capacity of Undos (tested about 2 dozen steps; before I’d been allowed only 3 or 4, or sometimes even fewer).
