Q: App Store updates broken

I cannot update certain software. Safari 8.0.4 is an example. The progress bar flashes quickly then nothing else happens. The update never goes though. In the past when this has happened I have downloaded a stand alone installer. Safari 8.0.4 is unavailable.

I've tried removing caches and temp files associated with the store to no avail.

any ideas?

ps iPhoto update worked fine

I had a lot of strange issues after the El Capitan update.  I did a restore from a couple days after I ran the update and all of my issues were resolved.  My updates completed and cleared and there was nothing left in the trash.  Since then other updates have run correctly and I can empty the trash.

I'm running on Yosemite and trying to download El Capitan. Unsuccessful due to Apple Store problems.

My problem has just solved itself by downloading a new app in the App Store. Suddenly El Capitan was downloading to. I'm now installing the new OSX.

    For others finding this discussion:

The instructions I posted here seven months ago applied to Yosemite, and are not suitable for El Capitan. If you're running El Capitan, followed those instructions, and now can't empty the Trash, the easiest way to recover is to start up from an external storage device on which OS X has been installed. You'll then be able to empty the Trash. If you use FileVault, you must first mount the internal drive in Disk Utility.

An extra boot volume is useful to have anyway. You can use an inexpensive USB flash drive of at least 16 GB capacity. To install OS X on the device, follow these instructions:

How to install OS X on an external drive connected to your Mac - Apple Support

Alternatively, restore from the backup you made before moving the folder to the Trash. If you backed up with Time Machine, see below:

OS X El Capitan: Recover your entire system

If I boot from an external drive, the Trashed files don't appear in the trash, but they're back when I reboot from the main drive. Now I can't even move them from the trash to another folder.

    Are you using FileVault?

While booted from the external drive, make a copy of any file and move that copy to the Trash. Empty.

    Didn't work.

I gave in and booted into the recovery partition and reinstalled OS X. The damned folder/files are still in the trash and can't be deleted.

Can you see the other files on the internal drive when booted from the external?

If all else fails, you'll have to disable System Integrity Protection temporarily as described here:

    https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/Security/Conceptual/System _Integrity_Protection_Guide/System_Integ…

Re-enable it after emptying the Trash.

Yes, the internal drive is fully accessible when booting from the external drive. I even tried copying that same folder again to the trash, and I was able to both do so and delete it when booted from the external (the trash was then completely empty), but when I rebooted the internal, that same folder was still there. The ultimate problem is the folder

    PKInstallSandboxManager-SystemSoftware

which I cannot move, delete, open, or change permissions on.

OK, temporarily disabling System Integrity Protection worked. Thanks for all your help.

Are there steps like this that work for el Cap? since these do not. I am having an issue in el cap where the 10.11.1 update wont install. I posted a support question but so far the only advice I got was to visit this page. Which apparently would make things worse requiring me to restore my laptop. Im trying to avoid that if possible.

Maybe this is related: I run Yosemite 10.5 on my servers, with Server.app 5.0.15. However the AppStore Update always offers an "update" to Server.app 2.2.5. I looked through the receipts, but there is only a single receipt for Server.app. Any hint where there might be any false information hidden? Strangely this behavior happened even after a 100% fresh install on a brand-new machine. The sequence then was (1) install Yosemite, (2) install Server.app 4.x , (3) check for updates => AppStore: "you need Server 2.2.5".  But that version will not even install on Yosemite (rightfully).

Any hint how to clear that nuisance? Thanks in advance

Is it the same procedure for installing Mac EFI Security Update 2015-002 1.0 ? I am trying to install it since December but it keeps appearing on updating list. I did everything you've described but it's still there.

    Thank you in advance
