Q: El Capitan: Kernel: hfs_clonefile: cluster_read failed - 34

I got loads and loads of these errors after upgrading to El Capitan. Sometimes as much as thousands per 10 minutes. Sometimes so bad, that IO was heavily impacted when logging these errors.

After booting it is normally OK, but it starts at some point and gets worse and worse with multiple occurrences per second.

Googling found 0 (!). There are a lot of topics with "cluster_read failed - 5", but these are real Disk I/O errors and always also show an accompanying Disk I/O error. I do *not* get Disk I/O errors.

I put the drive through DriveGenius 4 and all OK.

I'm trying to find out why this happens and it looks like this is El Capitan specific. If I do a fresh install of El Capitan on a freshly formatted drive, It takes about 10 minutes for this error to kick in. The same procedure with Yosemite does NOT produce this error.

Things that I think might be related:

- Running El Capitan instead of Yosemite

- iMac (27-inch, Late 2012)

- Thunderbolt connected drives

- Perhaps related to sleep mode (although this does not happen under Yosemite!!!)

- Perhaps related to FileVault (I pre-format my drive encrypted before installing).

- Perhaps related to LaCie 2big Thunderbolt 2 drives

Things that are not related:

- Software installed (I did fresh installs of Yosemite and El Capitan to compare)

- Hard drive sector errors

Anyone seen this as well?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

    Hello Linc,

    thx for your fast reply.

I disconnected everything but the Network cable and the thunderbolt cable to my LaCie 2big thunderbolt 2 drive, which is the boot drive.

FileVault2 is enabled on that drive.

I logged into the account in safe mode, which was clearly active based on SAFE MODE in the top right and degraded graphics performance.

The error came within 2 minutes.

NOTE: I am 100% sure now that this ONLY happens in El Capitan. I have freshly installed El Capitan - no configuration - no software installation - no peripheral attached but network and LaCie drive.

When I make a Yosemite install drive and do the same test with Yosemite, this does not happen. I have worked 2 days in that freshly installed Yosemite and no error like this.

After installing El Capitan from scratch on a freshly formatted drive, this happens within 10 minutes after logging in for the first time and it looks like it becomes worse over time.

I have used Apple Capture Data v9.4 for the freshly installed El Capitan and the first login and included the file system check until the error happens for the first time. I believe now that this is *not* related to sleep mode, because this time the iMac went into sleep mode and woke up without the error. The error came for the first time a few minutes after waking from sleep.

    I do seem to

I did the same for a brand new Yosemite install, but then I aborted after 45 minutes, because the error does not happen.

The El Capitan size is 41MB.

    The Yosemite size is 18MB.

If you want I can post this data.

The iMac just came back from sleep and Console was spitting out 1-3 of these errors per second.

I could hear this also acoustically on my disk.

    BUT...

As soon as I close the Console, this stops.

When I look at the messages in /var/log/system.log, there was a pause while Console.app was not running.

So this appears to be tightly related to running the Console.app in El Capitan.

I will now try to see if these errors in fact ONLY happen with Console.app running (which may explain why nobody else noticed until now) or if they also happen without Console.app running.

OK, this *does* happen without Console.app open as well.

But I think the Console.app occurrences are related to this error in the system.log file:

21/10/15 13:13:52,003 Console[492]: Failed to connect (_consoleX) outlet from (NSApplication) to (ConsoleX): missing setter or instance variable

It could be a co-incidence, but from the log it appears as if the iMac wanted to return from sleeping:

OK, I found another action that generates this error in El Capitan (but not Yosemite):

Whenever I open a new tab in the Terminal.app application, there is a corresponding error message BEFORE the system.log file shows the new process:

Weird. I just rebooted with CPU and HDD sleep turned off, trying to see if that might initiate this error.

After rebooting, both Terminal.app and Console.app did not generate this error.

But after being away from my computer for a while, I did notice 2 more errors. I can't attribute them to Console.app or Terminal.app. But at least this shows that the error can also happen when CPU and HDD sleep has been turned off.

    This is the first occurrence:

Restarted with out reopening apps. CPU + HDD sleep off.

No idea why these errors keep coming after a while (monitor sleeps).

First, I'm not sure whether "Drive Genius" loads in safe mode. If it does, it's suspect. You should get rid of it anyway, because it's useless at best.

Assuming that the problem isn't solved that way, have you enabled TRIM support on the SSD using the trimforce(8) command? Do you have the same problem when booted from the internal drive, with the external one disconnected?

    Hi Linc,

DriveGenius is not installed at the moment. This is a brand new El Capitan install on a freshly formatted drive.

Same installation but then Yosemite does NOT produce these errors.

I just did a test again with CPU, HDD and monitor sleep off.

It seems to be consistent that the error occurs together with a "ASL Sender Statistics" message:

The current boot drive is the external LaCie 2big Thunderbolt 2 drive - no SSD.

The internal drive is a 3TB fusion drive. Will try to boot from that one next with and without the LaCie connected.

    Hello Linc,

seems that the issues only occur when booting from an external thunderbolt drive.

When booting from the internal 3TB Fusion drive, this does not happen.

But personally I don't trust this Fusion drive. It has died on my already once and was replaced.

When that happens again, I want to be able to boot from an external drive.

    Hello Linc,

this was not necessary for it to work.

Also, I think that Apple already used TRIM for their own SSDs?

It seems that El Capitan has issues when you boot from an external thunderbolt drive.

    Sigh....

I thought installing El Capitan on the Internal HDD was the solution, because the error did not occur.

But my user directory is too big to fit on that 3TB internal drive.

So I created a new user who has his home directory on the 12TB LaCie 2big Thunderbolt 2 drive.

I logged in and started to configure stuff, but unfortunately the error has returned:

I wasn't suggesting that you enable TRIM. I was asking whether you had done it. I gather that the answer is no.

You seem to have isolated the cause of the problem to the LaCie drive. Follow up with their tech support. That's an expensive device and you're entitled to support from the manufacturer. Probably it needs a firmware update.
