Q: iOS 9 lightening to USB audio clicks and pops

Hello,

I use my iPhone in a Chevy Volt via lightening cable to the car's usb port. After upgrading my iPhone 6 to iOS 9, the audio consistently clicked and popped. This only happens via usb, and audio from the headphone port is fine. I confirmed this with the Music app, ibooks, iHeart Radio, and Pandora. I put the phone in airplane mode and it had no effect, meaning, the clicks and pops still existed.

I quickly downgraded my phone to iOS 8.4.1 before apple doesn't allow it anymore, and everything is back to normal. No clicks and pops.

I'm putting this out there to:

  1. see if anyone else had this issue
  2. see if anyone else came up with a solution
  3. to let apple know this needs to be fixed in their next update hopefully.

It's a shame that this glitch happened. as otherwise, my phone was great with iOS 9.

Thank you.

I just talked with apple support again (3rd time), and now I got in touch with a person in the senior apt of apple support here in norway. He will be my personal help throghout this major issue with iOS9.

I reffered to this link again, so they are watching us now :-)

There is a couple of small things he told me to do, before he will take this to the engineers at apple.

Im going to film when im connecting to the stereo in my car, and also take a picture. So I will do :-D

I will get back to you, when I get some more answers.

But there is one thing all of you in this tread have to do…Call support and don´t give up, because we have the right to be taken serious ..  The people that choose apple is people who love music and good sound.

Did the same thing: contacted support. You can do it even without AppleCare as it is related to iOS 9 upgrade. They made a note of it and will monitor the issue until more people complain about it. So please do complain.

Public Beta 5 just came out, so i'll give that a go and update here. It's a very frustrating issue because it makes listening to podcasts or music a terrible experience.

If you're in the Public Beta program you can also use the Feedback app, this is probably the most direct route to engineering related staff.

Well, iOS9.1 Public Beta 5 does not solve the matter. Exactly the same as before...

Same thing here. 2012 Chevy Volt - iPhone 6plus connected via lightning to USB and get a horrible clicking and popping sound. I'll give support a call to add to the growing list of complaints. I think I'll cancel my Apple Music membership until this is resolved...

    Good!!

Call them again and again.. They have to come with a solution/answer.

Because if they don´t solve this, we have the rights to get the money back for the iPhones/iPads that does not work like when bought.

And that would be sad.. Really sad.. After seven years with iPhone, and I bought the newest every year.

I´m waiting for an answer from the Senior apt and the engineers at Apple.

Let us all know what they say. I hope they fix it but I am willing to bet they won't and they will let this be a GM issue. Im still here and monitoring this thread.

So I just called apple support. They gave me a slew of items to complete to check before moving forward. 1) check to see if I can recreate the problem using another phone running iOS 9. I'll use my wife's. 2) restore my phone. 3) take the phone to an Apple Store and see if they'll exchange the phone. 4) call back if the above steps fail.

The support person said she also owns a GM car and noticed the same thing. She said she would unplug the phone then plug back in and the problem would go away. I'll try everything just so I can say I attempted to narrow down the problem.

I posted on here a few days back. I have a Nissan with a Bose sound system no GM but I do have the same issue discribed here. I called support, and mentioned this forum (they didnt seem to care about it). What they've told me to do is: do a hard reset, change USB cord, play music through Bluetooth, and contact Bose to see if there is an update for my car. They sent me to a senior tech who is supposed to help me with this. Both reps that I talked to stated that they have not yet heard about this issue.

This also happened on my Hyundai.

    iPhone 5s, iOS 9.0.2.

Will not charge, play any audio through USB OR Aux input, with genuine Apple cables or 3rd party.

This seems to be a different issue: this topic is about pops and clicks in music that plays. You say it does not charge and does not play at all, that is a different problem. Maybe it would be best to set up a separate topic for this one?

Just got an iPhone 6S Plus and can confirm the issue is exactly the same.

This is so frustrating. A brand like Apple is always trying to be different and saying they really care about customer satisfaction. This clearly has a very negative impact and is just a terrible experience.

What's even more annoying is reps telling you to do hard resets, phone swaps, change usb cords etc etc. This is the old 'did you already reboot your system?' question we get from every lousy helpdesk around the world.

The issue is simple and reproducable: it was working fine up to iOS8, it got broken in iOS9. It is clearly a software issue as it happens on iPads, iPhone 5S, iPhone 6 and now also confirmed with brand new iPhone 6S.

Suggesting you should contact Bose or your car dealer is absolutely infurtiating: they did nothing wrong. The hardware has worked for years and Apple's update broke it.
