Q: iTunes won't open after updating to 12.3.1

Hi I have OSX 10.11.1 running and I updated my iTunes to 12.3.1. Now all I get is the spinning beach ball when i try to start iTunes. I did a force quit and rebooted but the same thing is happening. I have a huge music library so I thought maybe it was doing some kind of update by after a half hour iTunes is still got the spinning beach ball. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a similar problem. After updating El Capitan to 10.11.1 and iTunes to 12.3.1 it takes ages for itunes to be launched. The beach ball is practically from the start and after a few minutes, once it's opened, it is still frozen, I believe searching for my iphone and iPad over WIFI. it takes 3-4 minutes to locate them under devices whereas it used to take 20-30 seconds before on 12.3. Once is ready to use, to lay a song takes 20-30 seconds and with the beach ball again. This is the worst itunes version I be ever experienced. It's so laggy.

I tried unsuccessfully to downgrade to 12.3 thru Time Machine but unable to ad getting an error: iTunes is part of OSX and cannot be modified.

I know iTunes has been laggy since version 12 but this is unbearable. Is anyone else experiencing the same problems?

ive got an 27" iMac late 2012 i5 with 16Gb of RAM so it's been pretty q since day one.

Exactly the same here. Wish I hadn't bothered updating.

Give bug feedback to Apple Through the software - or this site: http://www.apple.com/feedback/

Also you can request a support call setup through the Contact Apple page (I think) - in that case include size of Itunes library - podcasts, music, books, movies etc.

All user looking at this page - its the answer to getting it fixed

There was a problem with one of ITUNES 11 updates where large libraries of podcasts prevented ITUNES from opening properly - so this may be the same type of bug.

    Update to my original post.

Finally the iTunes application did open however iTunes still doesn't work. It takes a few minutes of the spinning beachball every time I click anything. It takes a few minutes to play a song and then stops playing music after the first song is finished. Right now as I'm typing this the spinning beachball has been running, To put it simply iTunes is not usable anymore. It's been getting worse every update for the last year or so. Getting more and more laggy. Until they bring out an update I won't be able to play music or watch movies which is how I spend most of my time Yeesh.

I'm having the exact same experience as everyone here.  Hope they're able to send out another version soon, don't think I'll be able to use iTunes until then...

I also have the same problem. I have sent a message to Apple about this problem. Fortunately, I have a dedicated backup hard drive, so I will be able to go back to the previous version if necessary.

I sent in a bug alert. Been posting to another, similar thread. Earlier, I was at least able to open iTunes and once in awhile select something. This morning, I can't even get a window to open when I restart iTunes. Last night, reinstalled program from Apple site. Didn't help. Very frustrating situation, considering how much I use/reply upon iTunes. Hope they fix this soon.

I 've tried to do this with Time Machine but I've got a pop up saying that iTunes is part of OSX and cannot be modified. Ive tried deleting and instilling iTunes and had the same problem. I think we are stuck with this version until 12.3.2

Well, I downloaded some trial versions of some iTunes alternatives for the sake of troubleshooting and it confirmed my suspicion: my iTunes library is now corrupted.  I tried the fix of dragging the .itl file to the desktop and renaming one of the previous libraries but it didn't work.  Still unusable.  I'm afraid I'm going to have to rebuild my entire Library (which contains over 25,000 songs).

I didn't go through Time Machine app. I opened the backup disk directly, then went through the folders as though it were any hard drive; found iTunes 12.3 from before I updated to 12.3.1; dragged the file to the desktop; opened iTunes 12.3 from there w/out touching the "official" iTunes 12.3.1.23. For me, there wan't much improvement; I think there the new El Cap update is also causing issues w/ iTunes. But your mileage may vary.

Apple has been updating iTunes a lot lately, and every upgrade is worse than the previous one. Is there an alternative to iTunes? I'm tired of this s**t!

    Newest update

After reading up on this issue it appears my iTunes Library.itl file is probably corrupted. That is the file that keeps all your playlists, song ratings etc information. When I moved that file from home/music/itunes to the desktop and reopened iTunes it worked perfectly. No lag at all. Unfortunately when I take an iTunes Library.itl from a Time Machine backup it won't work either. This is heartbreaking for me because I have been working on my music collection for many, many years and have close to 9,000 albums. If I have to recreate all my playlists it would take months. Not only that I have rated a huge amount of songs and created smart playlists for them. How do you replace that? Please Apple fix this.

We need to send this problem to Apple Feeback, it seem they don't ear about this annoying bug ...
