Q: how do I keep watch from locking constantly? It won't receive calls or texts.

To have apple pay the passcode is required but my watch locks within seconds of use, even with phone close by.

    Hi Greg

    Have you enabled Wrist Detection?

On your iPhone, in the Apple Watch app, go to: My Watch > General > Wrist Detection - enable this.

Thanks Jonathan, but I did have that turned on.  It's an iPhone 5, does that make a difference?

    Hi Greg

Your iPhone model is not the cause. Tattoos can affect sensor performance. Otherwise, try these steps (checking after each):

    • Wear your watch snugly on the top of your wrist. If your band is too loose, the watch can lose contact with your skin, causing it to believe that it has been removed - and lock automatically.
    • Restart both your iPhone and your watch. Turn both off first, then restart your iPhone before your watch:
      • To turn your watch off: press and hold the side button until you see the Power Off slider; drag it to turn off.
      • To turn it back on: press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo.
    • Force restart both devices (iPhone first, followed immediately by the watch):
      • iPhone: press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home button for around 10 seconds, until you see the logo.
      • Watch: press and hold both the side button and Digital Crown for around 10 seconds, until you see the logo.
    • Turn Wrist Detection off (Watch app: My Watch > General > Wrist Detection), then restart your iPhone and watch (as above), then re-enable Wrist Detection. (Turning Wrist Detection off will cause cards to be removed from Apple Pay).
    • Unpair and re-pair your watch. The Watch app on your iPhone takes backups of your watch automatically, including a refresh when unpairing via the app. When setting it up again, you can restore your watch from backup. Most data and settings will be restored, with some exceptions (eg Apple Pay cards). If the problem recurs after restoring the watch from backup, try again but this time set the watch up as a new watch.

If none of these steps helps, you may have a faulty unit. Contact Apple Support or make a Genius Bar reservation at your nearest Apple Store with a view to having it checked under warranty:

By the way, the idea is to mark useful responses as "This solved my question" or "This helped me", rather than your own reply
