Q: After ios9 update my emails with attachments won't open and say "message not yet downloaded from server". They were there previously. How do I get them back?

All my email attachments are unopenableafter the ios9 upgrade. Anyone else with this issue?  How do I get them back?  The emails just say message not yet downloaded from server.

iPhone 5, iOS 9

Your experience seems to be the exception not the norm.  I do hope that continues for you.  I thought I had this in my rear view mirror until I started seeing no message content except for the dreaded dialogue.  That began roughly 16-18 hours on mail that was received and sent after the update to iOS9.1

What I can't wrap my head around is why this bug should have impact on messages in the Sent mailbox.

There was a hint in the reply you get from your Apple representative: Messages are stored in the email cache in RAM, and not written to permanent storage. So the messages will only be visible until iOS needs memory (RAM) and releases the mail cache. The correct solution is to write messages to storage, and the latest update apparently doesn't do that.

This really is most 'peculiar' why there are still some users, including yourself, who are still experiencing the same issue after the 9.1 update installation; while others like me and my team who are now no longer experiencing any of these dreaded issues.

I'll report back if our current 'good' luck changes with any of our devices in the coming days.

So, not a single "sent" email with an attachment in your sent folder has the dreaded "msg cannot be downloaded from the server" since the 9.1 update? What POP server are you using?

Yes, I see that thanks.  Hopefully Apple Engineering will timely update the latest update.  It is interesting however that jaymlee reports a team of 10-12 users have not seen this issue since updating to iOS9.1

Everything appears to be working how it use to be after the 9.1 update last night, emails in all folders are still complete in all devices even with the BT POP mail servers wiped clean.

SAME PROBLEM WITH AltaMail Go.  At the suggestion of someone on this board, I downloaded and installed the free version of AltaMail.  Even though I have a POP set up,  I am now starting to get messages that read:  "This email is no loner on the email server and can't be loaded.

I'm afraid I got one of those too, from AltaMail's pay version. POP email account, set up after the release of POP-unfriendly iOS9. Very odd, only happened once, to one email in the middle of a thread.

9.1 still does not adhere to the POP protocol as I understand it.  Previously read emails only display properly if a cellular or wi-fi signal is available.  9.1 still appears to be downloading to cache and not physical memory.  When wi-fi or cellular isn't available embedded attachments display as a ?-mark inside a box.

The myMail app has been rock solid for me for the past 2 weeks now.  I set up my POP Verizon mail and Yahoo mail accounts on it.  Not a single lost email (sent or received) yet!

TThis has been the case for a number of years. I think it is more oversight than deliberate action. IMAP is much more common as the majority of people have multiple devices and only want to delete a message once. That isn't what we want for our family as my partner and I don't want the message from our shared email account to disappear just because one of us didn't find it interesting / important. Pop is still relevant for a significant group of users as this theead shows but if we want functionality corrected, inserted or fixed then we need to voice to be heard and that requires everyone to use the official Apple feedback page. These forums just help us to confirm our understanding and refine our arguments!

II've held off replying until I have given sufficient time post the 9.1 update to confirm we are clear. Here are my observations:

    1. We have update an iPhone 6, iPhone 5c iPad 3 and iPad Air 2 To 9.1. All we're exhibiting identical symptoms post upgrade to iOS 9. All our email accounts are pop.

    2. I have had iOS 9.1 running on my iPhone 6 since last night. All emails that I have received today are still present. There have been no cases of "this message has not been downloaded from the server" in any of the emails received post update.

    3. Unsurprisingly older messages already affected have not been recovered.

    4. I noticed a lag when opening emails with graphics or pictures. When I select airplane mode the email text is unaffected but the pictures are not shown only the empty frame placeholder. I can confirm that data is being used to download these images (from where? More to follow).

    5. Attachments such as PDFs are not affected by lack of a data service (good news) so whilst not pretty pop emails are once again functional when off the grid (important for me in a rural area).

    6. When I got home I downloaded today's emails to the computer which removes them from the email provider server. all of today's emails were still accessible despite the original no longer being present in the email provider server or any of the folders. I even turned the iMac off so there could be no weird back channel to the only other version of the email.

    7. When I select airplane mode the pictures in emails still disappear, when I select airplane mode off the pictures reappear with a slight data usage (difficult to attribute categorically) where is this data being cached???

in summary - based on a sample of one uk email provider (BT) and 4 iOS devices from iPad 3 iPhone 5c to iPhone 6 iPad Air 2, pop/smttp email is functional again on iOS 9.1. Text and attachments appear to remain on the device even when data connection is lost and the email is no longer available on the server. Something has definitely changed and it's certainly not pretty, I'm also a little concerned that my email is being stored in another location. So good news with caveats

GLad it is working for you and a few others, but by no means can we say POP email is working in ios 9.1 when there are still so many still being affected, after upgrading to 9.1.

I To still have the problems after recent upgrade 9.1Mon both iPad Air and iPhone 6.

I Also stupidly upgraded to el capitan on my Mac and have now lost all emails in my inbox and sent folders. I do still have emails that I filed into folders but had kept many in my inbox for easy reference.

This is is an absolute joke now
