Oct 21, 2015 10:33 AM in response to Dan Mitchell1by Nubz N.,Hi Dan,
I can understand wanting to stay with the version of iMovie you are familiar with. When you say iMovie crashes every time you use it, it sounds like it is freezing as you mention the need to force quit.
As I'm using El Capitan and iMovie 9.0.9 is working fine, please check out the troubleshooting steps in this article.
Mac OS X: How to troubleshoot a software issue - Apple Support
In particular, try things like testing with a new project, test under a different user, etc.
Please let us know how it goes.

Oct 21, 2015 12:01 PM in response to Nubz N.by Dan Mitchell1,The first time after installing 10.11 OSX it worked fine.
Then each time I start it up thereafter I just get a big dark gray screen, no red/orange/green dots at top LSH. But two small rectangular boxes in the otherwise gray screen - one is all-black within which the word "Now" on a tiny blue box. Also another small rectangular box has the heading "Event library"
This has to be force quitted as there is no normal set of the colored dots. So in effect I cannot test it as it does not even start in a usable condition. Where can I download a new copy of version 9 ?

Oct 22, 2015 2:21 PM in response to Nubz N.by Pete Collins,Your post indicates your iMovie 9 works fine after the El Capitan upgrade.
Mine does not. Can you attempt to verify for me? Most things seem to work fine, but attempting to overlay text causes an immediate crash on my machine. Does this still work on your machine?
Thanks!

Sorry I meant 9.0.9 only worked the FIRST time I used it, thereafter now it crashes immediately every time I open it.

Dan:Sorry for the confusion. My reply was actually directed at Nubz N.
Per that reply - "As I'm using El Capitan and iMovie 9.0.9 is working fine, please check out the troubleshooting steps in this article.

Again I would pose that mine install of iMovie does not work fine. Most things seem to work fine, but attempting to overlay text causes an immediate crash on my machine. Does this still work on your machine?
Thanks!

Oct 23, 2015 10:35 AM in response to Dan Mitchell1by Nubz N.,Hi Dan,
Well, I stand corrected. Thanks Pete. Testing further, iMovie 9.0.9 crashed when adding text with El Capitan.
So you would need a newer version of iMovie, which can be downloaded from the App Store, to be fully compatible with OS X El Capitan.
If you prefer to continue using iMovie 9.0.9, you can create a partition on your Mac to install an older version of OS X that supports this version of iMovie.
Please let me know if you have a Time Machine of a previous version of OS X where iMovie worked that you can restore to a second partition. If so we can help with that.
Additionally, if you don’t have you iLife ’11 disk, you can contact Apple Support to purchase a replacement copy.
Take care.

Oct 28, 2015 12:53 PM in response to Nubz N.by Pete Collins,I may have to do just that...
The newer versions of iMovie do not export to a 4:3 ratio (as iMovie 9 and old do). This is a pain for those of us that use iMovie to create Local Access programming because those channels are still Standard Definition (not HD) and as such are 4:3.
I'd be happy to use the new version if Apple would add this functionality back in.
Thanks for testing though. I thought it was on me.

Oct 29, 2015 1:51 AM in response to Pete Collinsby Dan Mitchell1,In my case, fortunately, I had a clone of a previous system state pre-El Capitan, on an external SSD, so I will just have to run 9.0.9 on that in future.

Nov 1, 2015 9:06 PM in response to Nubz N.by kylie099,Hi there,
I am having the issue where my movies have been ruined (clips have turned weird colours, disappeared) in iMovie 9.0.9 and it keeps crashing. I have recently installed El Capitan, and I desperately need to get these movies back. I just want to be able to open 9.0.9 successfully and have these movies back to the way they were. I do have Time Machine......however can you explain what this partitioning means?
Sorry to bother you, you just seem to know what you're talking about haha.
Thanks.

Nov 2, 2015 2:33 AM in response to kylie099by Dan Mitchell1,As my 9.0.9 version worked OK only the first time after installing El Capitan I suspect that El C. has corrupted my movie files and/or the 9.0.9 files - so it is possibly a permanent damage, alas.
I used "Super Duper" cloning software to keep a clone of my pre-El Capitan state on an external drive - so this at least still allows me a working version of 9.0.9 by my booting to the external clone disc. And of course any movie projects I was working on at the time I made the clone will also be still usable, since they will have been copied to the external disc.
Without this sort of clone it may now be impossible for you to use 9.0.9 again !

Nov 11, 2015 10:14 AM in response to Dan Mitchell1by realityisa,★HelpfulTo whomever says that Imovie 9.0.4 or 9.0.9 works with El Capitan please try to add a title (text) to your project and report back. It crashes.
So the solution is to revert back to a previous OS or upgrade to Imovie 10? I don't have an OS saved, and whenever I try to download the Imovie update on the App Store it fails.
And what if I do manage to update Imovie one day, I will never be able to export my 4:3 movies in 4:3? That's what I use Imovie for.
This is ludicrous.

Nov 12, 2015 1:41 PM in response to realityisaby mikalmmd,I will add my name to the chorus that is gnashing our teeth at Apple's shortsightedness. I LOVE IDVD! I LOVE chapter markers! I LOVE Titles in my created DVD's. Apple did away with chapter markers in iMovie 10. I must use iMovie 9.0.9 to have that wonderful feature. But now, just like others, if I so much as scroll through the Title panel, the program instantly crashes. And of course, Apple is no longer supporting iMovie 9.0.9. Dumb, dumb, dumb. Since I have to resign myself to this fact, does anyone have recommendations for low cost apps that combine the chapter markers, titles and themes that iMovie 9.0.9 and IDVD have had?

Nov 14, 2015 1:24 AM in response to mikalmmdby Gyppy101,If you can find a copy of iMovie 6HD it will work in El Capitan but it needs to be launched using Terminal. There are instructions for how to do this if you search the web. It's still a great little program and I've never stopped using it since it was launched!

Nov 14, 2015 8:49 AM in response to Gyppy101by Maapsal,I'm having the same problems as everyone else - when dragging jpgs in to a project they are simply black, and those that were there in previous projects have also gone black. Also crashes when I try to add text titles. I'm running iMovie 9.0.9 on a 2011 MacAir and wish I had never upgraded to El Capitan as I have a large number of videos to edit. Any advice would be appreciated - if I go to iLife 11 will that help? I don't understand what you mean by launching iMovie 6 in Terminal.
