Q: help please with bootcamp ISO on macbook air 11" 2015

will mac tech help me out with boot camp if i am within my 60 days or whatever?

anyway, OK. first off i admit it. every time i go to do a windows installation using boot camp i feel like i'm from the stone age and can never get this to work on my own.

so - i have a new 2015 11" macbook air and a mac pro and a windows 8 install disk and various USB sticks.

i /have/ previously created a driver USB disk for windows 8 when i did my mac pro installation of boot camp but i am not really sure if i need to create a NEW ONE when i do the install routine on the macbook air.

ALSO, i put the disk into the mac pro and tried to make an ISO on the USB to do the install on the air but i am not sure i understand this. i got to the point where i created the file on the desktop by selecting the CR ROM (i assume this is correct) and then i got to the point where i changed the file extension from cdr to iso. however, i seem to have one or two iso files on the desktop and when i try to EJECT the USB i don't think this is happening. i guess i should delete these other ones?

WHAT SHOULD i see on the USB with the iso file extension?

also, WHY is the air giving me an error telling me it does not see anything compatible to do the install?

FINALLY - am i correct in only selecting the LAT option in the boot camp dialog box?

OR do i also need to check the second box to download drivers for THIS computer (i mean, can i just use the one i created for the mac pro).

AND do i need to check the first option?

i'm obviously at a lost...

THANKS

    1. The MP Installer will not work on the 2015 MBA.

    2. The official install guide is  - How to install Windows using Boot Camp - Apple Support .

    3. Creating an ISO should use Create an ISO image for Boot Camp from Windows installation media - Apple Support . The ISO is single file. Put it on USB, eject, ply the USB into MBA and copy it to your Documents folder on the OSX on the MBA.

    4. Run BCA and check all three options and point to the ISO when prompted. Your USB will be erased/formatted. 2015 Macs can also use OSX Reserved and may not need a USB.

    5. Your MBA is different from your MP, so the second option (Download...) should be checked on the MBA when the USB installer is being built.

    hi LT

maybe one step at a time here?

how do i create an ISO from my dvd since there is no drive in the air?

I put a USB stick in the Mac Pro, insert dvd and use DU to write this .cdr unencrypted file to the desktop? then I change the file extension to ISO and MOVE it to the USB stick - or am I misunderstanding the directions for this?

    thanks

    jon

also, can you please clarify what the "installer" is? is it the BCA, the drivers I put on an external USB (I guess for backup and so they can be loaded?), or the .iso file?

Correct. You will be copying a single .ISO file to the USB.

    1. After the ISO is moved to the USB, eject it, connect it to MBA, and copy .ISO file to Documents folder.

    2. Run BCA on MBA, select all three options, point to the ISO in documents folder when BCA asks for it.

    3. Partition your MBA disk when prompted.

    4. Pick the correct partition for the Windows installation - https://help.apple.com/bootcamp/assistant/6.0/ .

ok. so then I /copy/ the iso file to my documents folder, check all three options and run the installation?

i point it to the ISO file on my hard drive and then what does it put on the USB stick?

BCA creates a USB installer which integrates Drivers and the ISO to create a bootable USB, which has the proper Windows pre-boot environment (WinPE).

ok. so i updated software and tried again. then i took out the USB stick with information on it and put in a fresh one an the installer started working. however, after i select the /size/ of the partition i now get this error. i don't /seem/ to have lost any data (will check the format on my drive) and i am pretty much at a loss on this one:

    Try these in order.

    1. Run DU Disk Repair and try BCA.

    2. Boot in Safe mode and boot normally and try BCA.

    3. Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks - Apple Support and try BCA.

    4. Run

Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support

How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

         and try BCA.

    5. Backup OSX via TM, erase internal drive, restore from TM, and try BCA.

    6. If you are here, there is a hardware issue with your internal storage.

    hi LT.

thank you. i will get to work on this.

can i please ask you what it means when you say there is a "hardware issue with your internal storage"? i mean, is this an issue of the actual hardware, the way the data got transferred to the machine, some combination of the two, somewhere /inbetween/ the two?

i ask because this is basically a two week old replacement for a machine that was 30 days old...

    THANKS

This is not a good sign. If you cannot get it work using the first five solutions, it indicates a hardware problem. The PCIe flash storage on this MBA is not working. What was the issue with the original unit?

ok. so I am on solution #1 and will redundantly back up before moving to solution 2.

is the fact that I am on solution one (or two or whatever) in and of itself not a good sign? I can't take a risk and get involved with issues at this point.

original computer had an issue with the keys.

No. It is fine. These problems also occur on many other Macs.
