Q: Bootcamp without Optical disc drive

Hi everyone. I want to install windows 7 on my iMac 24'' (mid 2008) but my optical disc drive is broken. I tried to install it with an USB flashdrive, but the system don't recognize it as a bootable device. I have the windows 7 ISO, vmware fusion, refit (i searched on the interet for the solution but i couldn't find any). thanks for help !

For item #3, unless you have the $WinPEDriver$ directory on the NTFS partition, you will be using generic drivers. The larger problem is Tuxera. Can you uninstall Tuxera temporarily and check if the Bootcamp volume shows up in System Preferences -> Startup Disk?

    goodmorning,

I did not have the specified directory on there, so that didn't help with the problem.

I had paragon and tuxera on my mac, uninstalled them both, before and after the disk wasn't and isn't show on sys pref/startup disk only the OSX.

    1. Does the disk show up when you press Alt/Option?

    2. Tuxera and Paragon are notorious for leaving modified KEXTs behind even after a removal/uninstall. Did the disk show up in Startup Disk with either of these installed?

    3. If you can run BCA, use option 1 and 2, and create a USB.

    4. Erase the current NTFS partition to be FAT32.

    5. Copy the contents of the USB to the FAT Partition, make it bootable using Gdisk and let us test booting.

There is a method to resurrect Macs with such issues, unless the hardware has completely failed. We start over.

    1. Create the USB installer using BCA (use the first two options - USB Install and Download Software).

    2. Create a partition and format it as FAT and put the contents of the USB in this partition.

    3. Bless it and try to boot from it.

Use DU to create the FAT partition. Use Gdisk (or Fdisk) to mark the partition bootable.

    1. Can you post the GPT and Fdisk commands' output?

    2. This looks promising.
