Q: How to set Google Maps as default map application in iOS 9

I have just upgraded to iOS 9 and it seems Apple has removed the ability to switch from Apple Maps to a third party map app as the default app when clicking address links from iCalendar, etc.

Is there a way to set a third party app as the default app to launch when clicking address links from other apps? Please help.

iPhone 6, iOS 9

Yes, you have the option in many apps, including built in apps, of opening other apps and transferring content. That, however, is not the same as setting the default app for a function, and, as stated ad nauseum, has never been available in iOS.

Figure out how to build better traffic reporting and faster routing and I'll switch.  Otherwise, get this POS out of my way.

    It's not all about you.

Apple Maps doesn't run on Androids

Yes, one will have rear-ended the car in front of one about the time one gets to "Routing Apps".

    Perhaps a driving lesson?

I apogize.  It's perfect.  Although Google/Android Maps works automatically, you can peck your way, head down through several menus in NYC traffic, almost as easily and quickly into jams unseen by Apple's stale routing

(Must placate the extraterrestrials or they will challenge the most common and sensical approach to any function.)

The possibility of having you driving behind me is a very good reason to avoid NYC.

    Take the subway.

Yesterday, Apple Maps took me 20 miles beyond my destination so I downloaded Google Maps and couldn't figure out: how to get it to work in Contacts without copy/pasting and to hear voice directions.

Your solution worked nicely.  As far as sound, I saw all sorts of crazy suggestions on other sites.  I found I had to simply click the sound volume up.  Seems sound is independant from apps vs using telephone.

Using Apple Maps got me to a close destination but it involved a lot of dangerous lane changing.  I cranked up Google Maps and it took me there with no lane changes and all turns at traffic signals.  It was a safer and quicker route.

You have said at least twice that the feature to set Google Maps as default has "Never" been available.  You are wrong and it was pointed out to you prior to your last statement that it has "Never" been an option.  The instructions were also provided.  "Never" is one of those words that one should not use unless they are sure it applies.  In this case, "Never" does not apply.

In IOS 8, here are the instructions to set Google Maps as the default mapping app:

Here’s How to make iOS 8 use third-party map apps on your iPhone or iPad

    1. On your iOS device tap on any address to make the operating system launch Apple maps app. You can use the following address as well. If it doesn’t work in Safari then copy and paste it in Notes app and try again.

    Apple
    1 Infinite Loop
    Cupertino, CA 95014
    408.996.1010
NOTE: You can use any address

    2. When in Apple Maps tap on the ‘Car’ icon to tell the app to start routing.

    3. Now on your screen you will see three tabs. One of them should be for ‘Apps’, tap on it.

    4. From the list of apps select the Maps application you want to use instead of Apple Maps. Simply tap on the Route button located next to it. On this screen you will also get a list of related apps that are available in the App Store.

Once you are done with the steps above your iPhone or iPad will always launch Google Maps or the app you chose whenever you will tap on an address.

This "always" worked in IOS 8.  Once the user selected Google Maps in this way, the default moving forward was changed and IOS 8 "always" opened up Google Maps when navigating.  Apple won't let us delete it's mapping product.  After IOS 8, Apple won't let us select any other product as the default app nor will it let us delete Apple's mapping product.  We purchase the phones.  Yet we cannot set the phones to use applications as default apps.  Someone with far more time and money than I have will someday challenge this practice, win and there will be a large payout.  It's like telling me I can purchase the car of my choice but must always use the manufacturer's tires, air freshener, etc.  I have to use products that meet standards to keep my warranty but I can use other "default" products on my car.  I guess there must be a safety issue, too big for me to understand, for it to be impossible to use other apps as default apps other than Apple apps.

The problem with all large companies is they become large by listening to their customers but once they become large, they listen to internal voices who know more, who know better and are not concerned with what customers want.  Over time, they lose market share for the same reasons they were able to gain it in the past; their competitors listen to customers better than they do.  Apple is over the hump and not listening to customers.  The old days are gone.

That does not set Google Maps as the default, Apple Maps is the default and you can manually choose to use Google Maps from there. But the next time you do it Apple Maps will open and you will have to manually choose Google again.

The default is the one that opens without choosing it.

Never tell people not to use never unless you have an answer that is correct, which yours is not.

Sheehanted is completely incorrect. I have no idea where you got those instructions, perhaps you made them up... but in reality you can go through those steps as many times as you want. When you test to see if google maps will popup for directions it won't. You'll get apple maps and have to repeat the steps each time.

For me, copy/paste is quickest and easiest solution.  At first I was impressed with Apple maps and used it for a few weeks with no problems.  Then one day, I used directions that took me about 15 miles out of the way...at least I was on the right road.  Form there I used Google maps and it took me to the correct address...only 4 miles from my home.  Oh, well, I got a nice scenic trip of Texas Hill Country...

And there will probably come a time when Google gives you bad advice. It once tried to route me over a (closed) highway department only road. None of them are perfect. At least Apple Maps can actually pronounce things correctly. But I still prefer Waze for traffic conditions.

Google Maps has sent me to the right address, wrong town on several occasions. It also sent me miles down a dead end road, that almost connected to a road it wanted me to turn onto. And best of all, it once wanted me to drive off a cliff along the California coast to turn onto a road hundreds of feet below the road I was on. All mapping programs have errors.

And people wonder why those warnings pop up the first time you launch some nav programs, the ones that basically say, "If the program tells you to drive off a cliff along the California coast, DON'T".
