Q: wireless Apple keyboard stalls requires restart

Since update, the keyboard/typing occasionally stalls and shows me alternate letter options, and there is a kind of fluttering key sound, like someone is pressing my keys. The only fix is to restart. Happened in Preview and in Firefox and in LibreOffice. Can't figure out a cause, but it works for a day, then starts up again. I restart because I fear a kernel panic (paranoid).

My desktop is not on wifi.

I tried this and it appears to be working so far, but it's really to soon to say. I did notice something curious when doing this, however. When my iMac restarted, a new preference was created in the Library folder of my hard drive, but the preference file in the Library folder of my user account was not replaced. So far all is working fine, except that I needed to re-pair my trackpad (keyboard and mouse remained paired through the process).

So my wondering is whether there should have only been one Bluetooth preference file in the first place and whether the two files were fighting one another? I also have no idea why there were two files in the different Libraries in the first place. Time will tell how this works.

It lasted a couple of hours, but returned on just waking from sleep. Very annoying.

Well after working for almost three days the issue returned when I woke my MacBook from sleep this morning.  I'm not sure what to do now other than do a clean install of El Capitan and hope for the best. Such a hassle. I reported the issue through Apple Feedback, but since it does not appear that wide spread I'm not sure that it will be fixed anytime soon through an update. Time to start backing everything up In preparation for the clean install!

I, too, have had the issue return. Please keep us posted as to whether the clean install works. I'm frankly nervous about doing that and would like to know that it is likely to work before I try. I have done just about everything else. Thanks!

I did fresh install of El Capitan twice on my MacMini late 2012. The problem still remains.

Thanks for letting me know!  Since I haven't started my clean install yet I will hold off.

Been reading on the Apple developer forum (which I signed up for today) that others are also having this issue and there's a much longer thread on that forum.  Everyone seems to think it is an El Capitan bug that occurs after a deep sleep.  Deep sleep kicks in after an hour on orders Macs and 3 hours on the later versions.  Since my issue always occurs after the MacBook Pro has been asleep for a long time (usually overnight) this sounds about right,

Also realized I had never really re=paired the keyboard yet.  I have turned keyboard off and on, but never went the whole non yards.  So I deleted the keyboard from the Bluetooth settings pane, went to the keyboard settings pane and setup bluetooth keyboard, and re-paired it using the code numbers given.  I'm sure it isn;t as simple as this and won't help, but it couldn't hurt!

Anyone makes any headway let us know!

Tried everything. Fresh install. Deleting Bluetooth settings. Re-pairing device. Nothing works. I also have a problem with external USB  audio DAC. It keeps constantly disconnecting when I try to play music thru it. As far as I can say, there is definitely a problem with USB drivers in El Capitan since in Sys. information Bluetooth is also connected thru USB hub. Everything worked in Yosemite and every other OS before that.

This is a bug that we'll have to wait to have addressed. I can also attest that re-pairing does nothing, as does resetting SMC, NVRAM and several other things that I tried, but can't remember just now. Powering the keyboard on and off is the only thing that does any good, but is only a temporary fix. I also have some USB issues, but only for connections through an external USB hub. None were an issue in Yosemite. I've been using Macs for a long time. This is the first time I have had issues after upgrading the OS. Since this appears to be sleep related, I am playing around with Energy Saver settings, but don't expect much will come of it.

In the developers forum they mention that slecting "preventing the computer from sleeping automatically when display is off" will temporally stops the issue.  Of course that is because the Mac is never going to sleep in the first place.

Surprised there isn't more people affected?  Wonder it it isolated to certain hardware only? BTW - I have a late 2015 15" MacBook Pro.

I have a late 2012 iMac 21.5", Nodilis mentions a Mac Mini. Already, this seems to be a fairly broad spectrum of products. It is curious that more don't seem affected. Then again, I think that more people than we might realize turn their computer off between uses and thus wouldn't have this issue present itself.

I have been having the same problems as well. Anything that uses bluetooth simply stops working after a few hours. Nothing in bluetooth is responsive (cannot even turn it off). Computer requires a reboot and then works fine. None of the fixes I have seen does any good.

This is one of many major bugs I have encountered, and I upgraded four days ago (and I am using a new MacBook, which should be the "most" compatible one would think). Overall very upset I upgraded.  Horrible operating system. Worst Mac OS I have used since OS 9 ~15 years ago. Did anyone actually use this before it was released!?

I never had that checked and still had the problem, but I did uncheck "put hard disks to sleep when possible" earlier today and am waiting to see any effect.

Nope, turning off "put hard disks to sleep when possible" didn't help either. guess I'll just keep restarting until there's another update. Maybe I will turn the computer off every evening.

I find that I don't have to actually restart the computer. If I turn the keyboard off (hold the button until the little green light goes out) and then turning the keyboard back on gets me going again. That's a lot faster than a full restart.
