Oct 22, 2015 6:12 AM in response to mkgrby Don Lasse,I updated to El Capitan from day one, and have had several issues related to mail ever since. Once in a while, my MBP would simply freeze up while mail was running, with no other option than to force a shutdown of the system. after reboot, launching mail would simply freeze everything up again.
The solution was to delete all logfiles from ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Logs/Mail/ as previosly suggested, after doing this, mail would behave normally again. Unfortunately this only lasted for a short period of time - after a few days (at best) same issue would occur all over.
I downloaded the 10.11.1 update last night, and so far everything mail-related seems to be running a bit more smooth - mail startup time is a bit faster, and haven't had any freezes since upgrading. Perhaps this update from Apple was the fix for my issues? Only time will tell...

Oct 22, 2015 6:15 AM in response to zwadderby loftyHT,I am not so sure that this is the case - I do not use Mac mail or Safari or i Cloud on any kind of regular basis. I have been monitoring the activity on my PC and even though I have never risen above 2.85 (out of 4) on my memory readings and never been over 45% CPU load the system still operates very slowly as compared to previously with X 6.8 I think that Mac has made some basic kind of blunder rather (not a IT expert but comparison shows: previous operation A1 present operation X 10)

Oct 22, 2015 9:47 AM in response to Don Lasseby Holzbock,Now what on Earth is THIS? I am just trying to perform the 10.11.1 update on an other computer, and instead of seeing the usual progress within the progress bar, the whole bar is kind of flashing like mad, and the checkbox on the right is intermittently switching from "Update" to "Cancel". There seems to be no way to stop this nonsense.
Please, Apple engineers, please return to the kind of quality we faithful users were accustomed to before El Capitan! Stop offering us countless gimmicks nobody really needs - we only want an OS that works, nothing else.

Oct 22, 2015 11:49 AM in response to ygourvenby ginafromhopewell junction,I agree the update this morning seems to have corrected the sluggish response on my iMac. However it has nothing to do with Office or any of the other issues I read here, I did al the email suggestions even though my email worked fine. No matter what I did it made no difference. So whatever it was that was making the OS so slow I will probably never know, however I have learned my lesson. From now on I will wait a considerable time before upgrading to make sure they have worked out all the bugs. I use this computer for work and can't have glitches like this while I work. If i wanted to work out glitches and try to figure out why things are moving slowly I would have kept my Windows PC.

Oct 22, 2015 1:39 PM in response to Eric Rootby profaen,I have also had a slow MBP since upgrading to El Capitan. I have downloaded ETRE and here are my results (but I'm not sure what to do next)

Oct 22, 2015 1:50 PM in response to profaenby John Galt,Start by getting rid of Avira, which is doing nothing for you but crashing.
Frankly, that Mac is an unmitigated disaster of ill-conceived and useless "anti-virus" and "cleaning" garbage, far too many to enumerate. If you want help, post a new Discussion. The answer will be to erase and reconfigure that Mac.

Oct 22, 2015 1:58 PM in response to John Galtby profaen,Thanks, I will trash AVIRA and see if that helps. I admit to having lots of "Clean-up" apps on my computer as the spinning ball has been driving me crazy. Appreciate your help.

Oct 22, 2015 2:11 PM in response to profaenby John Galt,Those sorts of apps don't solve problems, they cause them.
The answers to your Mac's performance problems can be found all over this site, but if you want personal attention the best way to get it is to start your own Discussion. It's just the way this site works.

Oct 22, 2015 8:34 PM in response to mkgrby Jim Little,Same issue on a MacMini. I have two MacLaptops that I updated to El Cap with no problems. But my MacMini was incredibly slow, particularly trying to stream video or listen to iTunes radio. Not running or using Mail app or iCloud. No obvious memory or CPU hogs in Activity Monitor. Uninstalled and reinstalled Flash without improvement. Zapped PRAM. Did several other "fixes" suggested in this thread. All with no-joy.
What ultimately fixed it for me was downloading and running the latest version of the Cocktail app for El Cap, followed by a reboot. http://www.maintain.se/cocktail/
I've been a long time user of this software with very good luck. You can try it for free, but worth the modest price IMHO!

Oct 24, 2015 12:20 PM in response to mkgrby Sam Ibrahim,I installed El Capitan last night , today i reinstalled it again and still running very slow , My iMac is responding very slow when i open Safari i see the wheel turning and after half a minute Safari opens and then if i type anything in the search the same problem persists. Not sure if Apple have to fix some bugs to make it wired better as my previous operating system.
any suggestions will be apricaiated.

Oct 24, 2015 2:20 PM in response to Sam Ibrahimby Philip Stearns,I finally got up the courage to upgrade my Retina 13"MacBook Pro to El capital last night. I prepped the SSD, optimizing the drive, testing for corruption, repairing disk permissions, using Cocktail to clear all the caches and log files, etc. My Mac has a ton of 3rd party stuff on it going back a few generations so I was expecting problems. Surprisingly, my laptop is now running much faster than before and is much more responsive. I have had to upgrade a lot of older software and ran into some issues where I had to sift through the Library folder, deleting obsolete files, etc. But error messages would appear that led me to the location of the faulty files. And now it's blazing fast. It's easy to find bugs, though. Like trying to create and name folders in Launchpad. Even with the folder title nicely selected, typing had no effect. But so far, so good... every new system has bugs. By the time we reach 10.11.4 or.5, it should be pretty much bug free.
I do think it helped that I prepped the SSD and upgraded most software BEFORE I downloaded and installed El Capitan

Oct 26, 2015 1:00 PM in response to Holzbockby profaen,I had exactly the same issue of the flashing progress bar. I called Apple support and they fixed it via screen sharing and trashing some preference files and after a restart , it was all OK,
I asked if it had been a common issue but they declined to answer. At least it was sorted quickly.
