Q: deactivate to reset icloud? workaround?

Hi I deleted an old email address. I now have new apple id. All good. Can access account, icloud, itunes etc. However, my devices do not allow me to delete my old account as the sign out requires a password and as the email is no longer existing comes up as invalid. I cannot turn off find my phone from the devise but can do so on icloud.

tried resetting on the device - i still end up with the same issue with not being about to sign out of icloud

 

I am considering this workaround

go to my icloud -

deactivate my ipod or erase it by turning off find my phone - i am assuming this will wipe out all personal data and apps etc - no problem have them all on itunes and mac.

then re-activate - make sure I delete the original backup on my mac so it doesn't reload the now defunct info.

then reload all my stuff via itunes

 

anyone done this before? I want to check before doing anything else - i don't want to be locked out of my devise once its erased.

Again, you cannot turn off Find My iPhone unless you have the password to the iCloud account that is signed on to the device that you want to turn it off for.

 

However, follow these instructions to remove the old iCloud ID from your device:

 

Signing Out old Apple/iCloud ID

    You have the right idea - if the data is not an issue (great thinking to have it backed up!)

    Then IF you erase your device from iCloud - then it will be reset to factory default and you can sign in to it again

    so just to be clear - erase from icloud - seems to indicate will happen automatically when i switch off the find my phone - great safety feature - then it resets to factory settings with the factory default settings.

    And to be sure,  the device retains my password login that is assigned to it that is the unlock password [1234 or whatever].

     

    Would it make more sense to

    1. do it on my ipod -  just to go to - settings - general - reset -erase all content and settings?

     

    2. then resync to itunes on my mac? - thinking all roads lead to erase.

    3. then reload everything - apps, muzak, ibooks etc via mac - all legit so all accessible via my account and itunes and ibooks.

    sorry to seem mac challenged here - just need to really be sure before erasing that I can get back into my devise to reload.

    If you don't know the password to the Apple ID that is signed into your iCloud account, then you won't be able to turn off Find My iPhone - you need the iCloud password to do that.

     

    Did you change your Apple ID to the new email address by Editing it via Manage your Apple ID? Or did you set up a brand new Apple ID? The solution depends on which you did.

    If you erase all content and settings - it will not erase the iCloud old email that seems to be the root of your issue.

    ok so the root of the problem is that the original email address is no longer valid - spam issues so I deleted it. I did change the apple Id to the new email address so i have access to my icloud and itunes etc. So no brand new account. That means i have access to the icloud account where I can 'see' both my devices and switch off 'find my phone' via my icloud account. Hence that thought bubble work around.

     

    Interesting a total erase won't clear the issue.

    I cannot even log in to icloud using the old email address as it doesn't recognise it - which makes sense as it's deleted.

     

    so perhaps i go back to plan one - erase via icloud where i can turn off the 'find my phone' which automatically wipes everything. So the question is - when this happens - does the device retain the password lock so i can gt back into the device and reload everything

    I can log into my icloud account and I can see the devices that are linked to it. Are you saying i will still need the defunct password and email account, which is not possible as it doesn't exist and one can't restart it these days.

    so to be clear - yes i can log into icloud.

    yes i can see the devices

    so if i take the find my phone switch off option - will that erase the links to the defunct everything so i can reload everything onto the ipod - phew ...

    not to self - by record player and pen and paper...

    Gail, very much appreciated. did as instructed and it worked. Fortunately, not having to verify enabled me to open up devices and switch off icloud so i can sign in with the name ID. phew. so the bottom line is that the apple id is always an email address because it verifies identity along with a password as a security process. So now my icloud has no devices and I will now add them back onto the correct account.
