Q: iTunes in iPhoto

Which upgrade is this? What version of iPhoto of you have?

So it's a different application. Easiest if you explain how you're trying. This is what I get in Photos:

The iTunes Library will only show the albums, not the playlists. And only the songs stored locally on your mac, not the iCloud songs.

Use the search field to find the songs you want to use in the playlist for the slideshow. You can search by song, artist, album, but not by playlist.

Your problem is that you're following instructions for a different app.

In Photos search for the song or songs, then double click in them to add them the the soundtrack (at Select Music). IN other words you make the play list in Photos, not iTunes.

You add the songs one-by.one in Photos.   First delete the predefined Theme music from the "Selected Music" pane by pressing the "x". Then drag one song after the other to the "Selected music".

Hi, I see you are very helpful to many posters.

My problem is that I am trying to make a slideshow in Photos on the new Yosemite OS and when I try to pick the music I want, I am getting a message "Open iTunes to populate this list."

iTunes is open on my machine. Can you (or anyone reading) help? Thanks

Is your music in the cloud? If the songs are iCloud download them to your music library by clicking the cloud icon with the down arrow.

Then restart iTunes and Photos.

Only songs stored locally on your Mac can be used in a slideshow.
