Q: Can you tell me about I.P. Addresses?
Hello Apple Community,
I have taken an interest on IP addresses, and I would like to know more about it and check if my understanding is correct. Of course, I am in an Apple Discussion site, so I would like my answers based on a Mac Yosemite.
These are the questions I would like to ask (You can just answer on the parts of what you know):
Basic Questions:
1. How does IP addresses work?
2. What are the differences between public and private IP addresses, and how are they used differently?
3. What are the differences between dynamic and static IP addresses?
4. What kind of information can one know by just knowing an IP address?
5. How does routers, modems, etc. work in the case of IP addresses?
6. How are IP addresses assigned?
7. How does IP banning work?
8. How can you check who is your ISP and contact your ISP?
9. How can you change your public and private IP address?
More Personal and Specific Question:
1. We have 2 routers in our household. When I changed the wifi network and restarted my browser, it was still the same IP address. Is it supposed to be like that?
[But when I was in different place (same country) and had different network (same computer), the IP address changed.]
Thank you in advance,
Littered

Another place to look, in an Apple database reference, is:
•OS X Server: Advanced Administration (apple help)
https://help.apple.com/advancedserveradmin/mac/4.0/
and enter the words ' IP address ' in that page search box
for information on topics within Apple's help server section.
The information in many section of this is for OS X in general
however a non-OS specific search using duckduckgo, or other
search engine may yield scores of results; some valid to all.
Of course, by selecting by name can vary the results a bit.
https://duckduckgo.com/?q=about+ip+addressing&t=ffsb
For general info, see:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_address
• Understandign TCP/IP addressing & subnet basics:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/164015
http://www.networkcomputing.com/netdesign/ip101.html
Why are you seeking to expand your knowledge on IP addresses?
There are various reasons why, and several sections more specific
to their actual implementation to networking, internet, & connectivity.
In any event...
Good luck in this matter!
