Q: Podcast app crashing in iOS 9

I just installed iOS 9 on my iPhone 6. When opening the podcast app I get a white screen, "Updating Library" and then it crashes after about 15 seconds. Anyone else experiencing this?

I've quit the app.

Restarted the phone.

Tried putting phone in airplane mode and opening the app.

Same result each time.

 

Help!

    The fact is, 9.0.1 solved the problem for many people, a fresh OS solved the problem for many others, and deleting a "bad" podcast solved it for others still. Those three troubleshooting steps have probably solved crashing issues for 99% of those having them.

     

    Having the same symptom does not equal having the same problem. If you cough and I cough, we can't assume we both have a cold.

     

    If you have really and truly unsubscribed your podcasts and then erased your entire phone and only installed a clean system (no backup!), then launched the Podcasts app and still crashed, yes, you probably have an issue with the phone itself.

    I had the issue with crashing after the "updating library" message.  9.0.2 fixed it for a couple of weeks.  Today, with 9.0.2, I could listen for 5-10 seconds, then the podcast app terminated and now keeps happening.  I then updated to 9.1 and it still happens.  It was working under 9.0.2 this AM but when I got home it was not.  I have no idea what changed.

     

    I also tried "Reset All Settings" and that did not fix it.

    I have the same problem.  I purposefully waited a while before downloading the latest update because something like this usually happens.  I am having to listen to my podcasts via their actual websites.  Ugh.  I called Apple support a few days ago and the agent I spoke to was nice, but seemed unfamiliar with podcasts in general and said that the issue of the podcast app crashing after the most recent update was not a known issue.  I suggested that he Google the issue and that he would see that it *was* actually an issue.  Anyway, it's very annoying, and I wish Apple would get on with it and fix the stinkin' app.

    I respect what you are saying Michael but it's BS. I "should" not have to reset my phone like it's a brand new iOS phone because of one app. That's crap and Apple has wasted hours of my time and "should" all over their customers, and in my case, my podcast listeners since I record podcasts. Their communication on this matter was crap and their techs refused to acknowledge there was even a problem. One of the reasons I'm a long time Apple computer, tablet, phone user has been the ease in transferring my "desktop" from computer to computer and device to device. I wouldn't be as bothered if they hadn't screwed up the podcast app before but they have. It's my day off so I'll try it all over again.

    I'm not saying that anyone's specific problem isn't something Apple can/should fix, and everyone has a right to software that works, but for Apple to get to all of the edge cases that can potentially crash an app among millions of users can take a while.

     

    Crashing is a symptom. A symptom can be caused by a large number of problems. As we just found out with 9.0.2 and Podcasts, what solves the problem for most people doesn't solve it for everyone - that means that the problems are different. 10,000 people might all suffer from the exact same problem, and a 10,001st person may have a completely different conflict with the specific environment on their device. But that 10,001st person will firmly believe that their problem is THE problem, because 10,000 other people have the same symptom.

     

    I started my career in tech as a phone support guy for a large software company, and unfortunately, this is life with new software. It looks like they rebuilt the Podcasts app from the ground up for iOS 9, meaning yes, there will be issues. (Try telling someone they need to reinstall their entire desktop OS - something we had to do a lot in the "olden days." I thanked God for OS X.)

     

    In the end, it doesn't matter whose "fault" it is, the choices are troubleshoot it or work around it.

    Big Thumbs Up There Michael!!!!!! So I think I fixed the bug. I went into the podcast app and deleted everything. Cleared the cache on the phone and restarted the phone. I did a backup to iTunes. I erased my whole phone and started over. Installed the backup and I'm re-subcribing to all my shows (30 podcasts at least) and the app has been stable so far as I add one show at a time.

     

    I have to agree that there must be something in the old data or settings that screws up the app.

     

    Thank you for encouraging one more try.

    I keep hoping after each update of iOS 9 (.2, .3 ) I download that it will finally fix it.

     

    Truth is I haven't been able to use the podcast app on my iPad since the first iteration of iOS 9  in September

     

    Clearly they designed a app much too complicated for my poor iPad to handle. Thanks a lot Apple, the conspiracy theorist in me thinks you don't really care and are trying to get me to just buy a newer iPad.

     

    Every other app I have works fine so I will remain hopeful that this will someday be fixed!

    I've been having problems with this, too. The thing that finally worked for me-I enabled the "background app refresh" for the podcast app. I don't know why it worked. I just know it finally works.

    Tried it.

    Enabling "background app refresh" for podcast app (and no other app) and rebooting my iPhone 4s does NOT work for me.

    Enabling "low power mode" DOES work since 9.0.2. Big disadvantage is that "low power mode" switches itself off if the iPhone is charged by 80% and the podcast app crashes immediately.

    VERY nasty bug!

    OKay so my podcasts app is officially fixed as of last night. First, I put my phone into airplane mode and opened my app. Doing this temporarily fixes it from crashing. After this, I went through and deleted all of my downloaded podcasts and then closed the app. I turned airplane mode off and the podcasts app no longer crashes. I just redownloaded my podcasts and everything works again!

    Djordan5: I tried it. I erased all my subscriptions (about 40) and started over. I had some crashes during subscribing all the podcasts again, but at the end it worked out. I then rebooted my iPhone 4s.

    For some hours, it seemed to work fine. No crashes. But then, the crashes started to happen again ALWAYS some seconds after the program was started. I had to switch on "low power mode" again and now it works as "good" as before. :-/

    Well, deleting all Podcasts off of all devices, then re-subscribing, worked

    Not elegant - very Microsoft-esqe - solution.

    i also had the problem only on my ipad mini but not om my iphone 6 or ipad 2. i tried doing a restore using my backup but the problem was not solved. i did a new restore and this has completely solved my problem. i then readded my photos and contacts et al which were saved on my computer and it works just like normal. 2 hours out of my life but i use this device every day.
