Q: Late 2015 27 iMac 5k RAM spec

I am planning to get a new iMac 5k 27" with 4GHz.  I'd like to know the RAM specs and any recommended third party RAM that I could use with the system.

Most RAMs available online mention a freq of 1866 Mhz but Apple's spec seems to be 1867, i.e. off by 1. Would that matter?

Also, what are the other things I need to look at before getting a third party RAM for the new iMac.

iMac with Retina 5K display, OS X El Capitan (10.11)

Did you install them in the two empty slots? That is the correct way. In the new iMacs with the vertical setup, slots 1 and 3 (from the top) should match, and slots 2 and 4 should match.

In the older Macs with side by side arrangement, it was recommended to match them horizontally.

Thanks babowa. I actually moved the 4gb modules into the empty slots and inserted the 16gbs into those two slots. I want the system to look for the 32Gb's first. I kept them staggered.  16 - 4 - 16 - 4

just wanted to be certain I did it correctly. it's been a while since I mixed ram sizes. At $600 a pair, it will be a while before I do another 32gBs.

Since they changed the configuration, I'm not sure that they are still being addressed in a certain order, but be that as it may, as long as you've got them matched, no problem. Still think what you got is an overkill, but... that is what you wanted and that is what you got.

Other World Computing guarantees the RAM they sell. Use their website to determine the RAM you need. If they sell it they will guaranteed that it will work in your system.

For those of you who is curious about 1866Ghz ram, I can confirm you it works and it will show as 1867Ghz on the late iMac 2015. I bought this kit: http://uk.crucial.com/ProductDisplay?urlRequestType=Base&catalogId=10153&categor yId=&productId=11732&urlLangId=-1&langId…

My new 5K iMac arrived this afternoon and I installed 2 sets of Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB Kit (8GBx2) DDR3 1866

I got them from Amazon at $88.99 per pair -  http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DSGLMSM

About Mac shows 32 GB 1867 MHz DDR3.  Not only does the new memory work, according to Geekbench it is faster than RAM that came with the iMac

                                        BEFORE     AFTER

    Single-Core Score      4486            4569

    Multi-Core Score        17424          17816

    Memory Single-Core    3649            4141

    Memory Multi-Core      3763            4349

The overall scores went up a little because they are mostly based on CPU performance.  But the memory specific scores went up a lot.

I'm glad that RAM I posted works!  I'm waiting for my iMac to arrive to install them as well -- good news about the speed (although the difference is probably not perceptible, the Ballistix RAM is advertised to be faster than standard RAM).  At the price, it was definitely worth it!

Can you show us (eg a picture or text diagram) how you installed them?  Did you install them so the faster larger sticks are the first block of memory the Mac sees?

    Just as in FYI....

I am not familiar with the latest iMac; however, on previous models, it was recommended to get RAM with the exact specifications as recommended by Apple as Macs are extremely finicky about the RAM. As well, the Macs were not any faster as they could only address the speed as noted in the specs.

Hopefully these modules will be working correctly.

Its funny cause your asking for 3rd party ram when all apple sells is 3rd party ram. Don't act like apple is the underdog anymore and original. No no no. They use LG for the 4K screen and Samsung for all the chips in mobile. And if dell can produce the same 5K screen but better where does this leave them?? There all just getting their supplys from one big factory.

I think it's more a case of people not wanting to buy from Apple directly cuz of their grossly overpriced rates on Ram.  Hence "first party".

I was always under the impression that the two banks should match if running dual-channel when all 4 banks are filled.  But, if running dual channel with only 2 dimms, then they should be installed with 1 dimm in Bank 0 and 1 dimm in Bank.  This is it how it has worked with all of my Intel motherboards so far as I used to mostly use PC?  If I am wrong, please correct me because I'm trying to figure this out with no available info from apple on the late 2015 iMACs.

I've asked around and it appears the way I have it set up is the correct way.  The computer came from the factory with the original ram staggered.
