Q: Screen stays dark when alarm goes off in the morning

When I use my iPhone 5 with iOS 9 as my alarm clock to wake me up (iOS clock app), the alarm sounds, but the screen does not light up. This means I have to fumble around in the dark to turn off my alarm. I have found that if I set a different alarm (a minute or two after the original alarm sounds, or an alarm during the day) the screen lights. A new alarm at a different time, if it is the alarm that wakes me, does the same thing where the alarm sounds and the screen stays black.

Is there some deep-sleep function that automatically turns on?

By the way, I have Do Not Disturb on at night, and is still on when the alarm goes off.

Does anyone else have any issues like this with iOS 9? It never did this on previous versions of iOS.

iPhone 5, iOS 7.1.1, A1428

I don't think it is related to low battery. I plug my phone in to charge at night, by the time the alarm goes off in the morning the phone is on 100% battery. Not low battery.

What I want to tell is if when I plugs my iPhone the batter is low, at the morning , the screen is off, else the screen is ON.

if my iPhone is not plugged, screen is always ON.

I see. When I plug my phone in to charge each night it's not normally less than about 30% charged, on a few occasions recently it's been 50%+ but the screen still hasn't come on with the alarm. Still if you can find a connection between battery level and the screen coming on with the alarm then I'll be interested. I haven't seen one yet though.

I just had this problem again this morning on my iPhone 5s iOS 9.1.   The first alarm I had set went off but screen stayed black. I hit snooze then when alarm went off again the screen turned on.  Also I use a 2nd alarm (5 minutes after the first alarm) and the screen will turn on for this alarm.  The phone was plugged in all night so it wasn't a low battery issue.

I am not sure if it makes any difference whether it is plugged in or not.

    • If I set an alarm to go off in a few minutes as a test then the screen will come on whether the phone is plugged in or not. (I tried both just now)
    • If I leave it inactive overnight then the screen won't come on with the alarm.
    • I don't know if leaving it unplugged overnight will make a difference as I always plug it in at night.

I'm not even 100% sure it'sjust an alarm issue. If I plug my phone in now, turn the screen off and then unplug it the screen comes on automatically when it's unplugged. If I plug it in at night and then unplug it the next morning it doesn't light up. It seems like the phone goes into some deeper sleep or something when left for a few hours.

This is the exact same results for me. I have run a few tests on the weekends and it seems like if its more than ~4hrs the screen does not wake on the alarm. Less than ~4hrs it wakes.

I have noticed that I can swipe across the screen to silence the alarm even though the screen has not lit up.

So it seems the operation is not affected by the dark screen. Very odd.

What says Laurent 3134 is if you connect the phone to pay less than 20% does not turn up the next morning, however if we connect the phone with more than 20% of battery if the display lights up the next morning with alarm , is this what you mention Laurent3134?

Does Apple monitor this sites to try and find solutions? or is there a specific way we need to raise this issue for a possible resolution?

The issue is still happening in OS 9.1, it has to do with the alarm setting on consecutive days and unplugging from the power, the iPhones do not light up the screens.

    1. The first time the alarm is set, it rings in the AM and the screen lights up, unplugging the phone from the power (to take to the can with me:)) it also lights up fine.

    2. The second morning and beyond, when the alarm goes off the screen DOES NOT light up anymore, even when unplugging from the power cord.

Now Can the Apple tech respond and tell us if there is a solution in the near future?

    Thank you

I'm not sure if they monitor it but I don't think they ever comment. You can provide feedback and bug reports here though: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

Something someone said earlier got me thinking about the battery. Often times, as I am fading watching TV on my couch, my iPhone battery is getting pretty low. And you get a warning message, with an option to switch to low battery mode. I've done so accidentally a couple of times and I noticed it stays set to on in Settings even if you have a full battery. I haven't seen this dark screen alarm issue too often. (BTW, I've gotten used to snoozing with the side button now, even if the screen lights up.) I'm wondering if it's normal functionality for the screen to stay dark when the alarm goes off if you are in low battery mode. Might be something to test next time my battery is really low. That would still suggest a bug since what contradicts this is I always sleep with my iPhone plugged in and charging. So while the battery might have been very low when I got into bed, in the morning it would be fully charged. Maybe the phone is confused when the alarm goes off and chooses not to display anything onscreen. Just a guess.
