Yes, apple would like you to buy a new MBP.. so they make you do upgrades that don't work.
Clean install the OS.. and if you have issues.. clean install the previous OS that did work.. you are not missing anything major by skipping an upgrade or two.. or more.
Before you do a clean install you can do the following.
1. Reset NVRAM and SMC..
2. Clean out all the previous wireless names stored in the airport under preferences/network/wireless. Reboot the computer and rediscover the network.
3. 2012 do you still have applecare on it.. ?? If so the solution is simple.. let apple deal with it.

He even referenced the same two articles.. you might think we consulted or collaborated.. but no.. we find info by using the method our kids use.. google.
