Q: Can't Activate My First Bankcard with Apple Pay

I received a notification from my credit card issuer (First Bankcard) that they were now able to support Apple Pay. I went through the process of setting up the card via my iPhone 5S for my Apple Watch.  The process went smooth enough and the card showed on my Apple watch with a message that said "Activating, Please Try Later".  I wanted for about 4 hours and this never changed.  I called my issuing bank and they said that the Token was active on their end and that I should try removing the card and starting over again.  So that is exactly what I did.  I removed the card from Apple Pay and then tried to re enter it but now I only get a message that says "Could Not Add Card, Try again or contact your card issuer for more information" I have tried about 15 times at this point and I've contacted my card issuer again and they said that the token was still active and that they had no idea what to to and to contact Apple.  So here I am in an endless loop where my credit card issuer is unable to help me and there is no "customer support" number for Apple Pay to call.  Has anyone else out there had this issue and if so; were you able to rectify it and how?

The problem may be due to the fact that First Bankcard is not on the list of Apple Pay participating banks >  Apple Pay participating banks

    Thanks Carolyn,

I received the email below from First Bankcard stating that they were able to support apple pay.  Perhaps the list you provided needs to be updated.

As I mentioned in my previous post.  I was initally able to set the card up but it said "Activating Please Try Later" for about 6 hours.  I deleted the card and tried again and now I get a message that says Could Not Add Card, Try again or contact your card issuer for more information".  I've contacted the Apple Pay people at my First Bankcard and they say that they can't even see a request being made.  At this point it seems that neither Apple nor First Bankcard can help me.  Is there any other insight that you might have?

    Hi

Try unpairing and re-pairing your watch and then trying to add the card again. The Watch app on your iPhone takes backups of your watch automatically, including a refresh when unpairing via the app. When setting it up again, choose to restore your watch from backup when offered the option. Most data and settings will be restored.

I have the same problem with NatWest. All went well but now stuck at "Activating" . I received SMS say activation successfully complete. However I note that whilst the card shows on the watch, it does not show in the Wallet on my 5S nor does the option to add a card appear in that App at all  (a problem elsewhere in discussions). This seems wrong as even though iPhone 5S cannot handle Apple Pay on its own it can via Apple Watch.  Does your new Card show in the wallet on your phone Passporter?

    Hi

Apple Pay is not supported on iPhone 5s (it requires iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus and later). You will not therefore see the option to add a card to Apple Pay in Wallet on your iPhone. Nor will Wallet on your iPhone list any cards that have been added to Apple Pay on your watch (via the Watch app on your iPhone), as the devices are treated separately.

Cards can, however, be added to Apple Pay on Apple Watch (as you have done) when using the watch with iPhone 5 or later.

    Thanks Jonathan, that answers that!

I have now contacted NatWest excellent Apple Pay support and my card showed activated on their system but still "activating" on mine. They suggested deleting card and retrying but it would not accept so they then deleted card from their system but as of now trying to re-add card is failing "Could Not Add Card".  Have agreed to reset phone and try later.

    Hi

You're welcome! When you try again later, first try closing the Watch app on your iPhone (double-press the Home button, then swipe up on the app preview), then restart both your iPhone and watch, turning both off together and then restarting your iPhone first.

Unpairing and re-pairing your devices as suggested above may also help.

I reset my iPhone and then shut both phone and watch down and restarted in order as you suggested, but still no success so then I unpaired the bluetooth connection. Now this got interesting because I could not then get the Watch and Phone to see each other to re-connect. So I reset the watch and connection to the phone worked fine and part of setting up the watch included adding a card for Apple Pay and bingo it worked perfectly. Thanks for your input.
