Q: Bootcamp problem: Yosemite 10.10.5, Windows 8.1

Trying to install Windows 8.1 on iMac (27-inch, Late 2013) running OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.5

Created Windows 8.1 iso image, sitting on Mac desktop

32GB clean formatted (Mac OS Extended (Journaled)) USB 3.0 plugged in

Run Bootcamp Assistant to set up

Get to the screen to Create Bootable USB Drive for Windows Installation and select Continue

Get the response: "Your bootable USB drive could not be created - There is not enough space available in the disk"

As I said, this is a freshly formatted USB drive with 32GB free...

Can anyone help? Thanks!

I can't seem to check all 3. If I check the first it greys out the second.

If I try the 1st and 3rd with the iso image from MS online, I get the error that there's not enough space on the USB. (I bought a new Lexar 16GB drive to rule out a defective drive)

If I try using the disk image I get that BCA can only create a Windows 7 or later installation.

    Both iso images are 8.1.

This is insane and I really appreciate your hanging in with me...

Check only option 1 and 3. Let Option 2 follow Option 1. Ensure the USB is erased and formatted as FAT. Put the Windows ISO on your desktop or a local location and use it when prompted.

If you were able to successfully check option 1 and 3, option 3 should have started the installation. Did it not? Can you post a screen shot o fetch USB file structure expanded at least two levels. Let us confirm that you have a Windows installer and the BC drivers all in place.

Ok. Here is how things start:

    Continue:

    Screen Shot 2015-08-22 at 3.58.13 PM.png

This is the iso image created by downloading directly from MS

    Continue:

    Screen Shot 2015-08-22 at 3.59.28 PM.png

If instead I use an 8.1 iso image that was created from an actual MS install disk, I get the following:

    Screen Shot 2015-08-22 at 4.06.27 PM.png

Here is the directory and info for the USB drive:

    Allegedly a 2.0 drive...

Generic USBs show many more problems. Can you verify that it is USB2 using the OS X System Report?

I looked up the specs of the flash drive and it said it is USB 2.0.

Here is the screenshot from system info if that will help:

    Thank you

Edit: FYI I have MBPr Late 2013

Why is this disk formatted as exFAT? It should be FAT32.

My understanding is that BootCamp is formatting it as it wants before creating a bootable USB so it should not matter what it was initially. However I have tried both FAT32 and ExFAT before commencing the installation and it did not make any difference.

Can you erase the USB and format it as FAT32? BCA should not modify it to exFAT, and the default is FAT32. I have yet to see BCA create exFAT. Is it possible that you are selecting this devices as your BC destination as well?

You should disconnect all other external peripherals, including storage, hubs. If you are not using a MacMini, disconnect external keyboard/mouse as well.

Try creating the install USB without the Boot Camp Assistant by following this guide: http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/103874/creating-a-bootable-usb-of-windo ws-8-1-on-os-x. That solved the problem for me.

To see progress while the 'dd' command is running, you can press ctrl+t in the terminal window. But be patient, it normally takes quite some time to finish.

I have tried resetting everything but no luck. Same problem.

@Spandmand but then I cant get bootcamp drivers. I tried downloading only Bootcamp software on my USB Flash and it doesnt work either. Just spits out an error midway.

This is really annoying. I have been trying to solve this for 2 weeks now and literally nothing works...

    1. Use only Option 2 (Download Software...) and download the software to a USB.

    2. Copy the Windows Support software from the USB to your desktop.

    3. Erase/reformat the USB as FAT32 and copy the contents of the Windows ISO/DVD to the USB.

    4. Copy the contents of WindowsSupport from step 2, preserving the structure at root level. It should look similar to the following. (Ignore the 5.1.5621 folder).

    5. Use Fdisk to mark the disk as bootable.

    6. Use Alt/Option key during boot, with the USB connected, to test if you can see the USB as bootable.

    7. Run BCA and use only option 3 (Install...) and partition your internal disk and test installation process.

    8. If it does not work, find a different USB2 flash drive.
