    Hello pjr49,

I understand that you're no longer able to choose accented characters by holding down a key (such as á or ö). If the Key Repeat slider in System Preferences > Keyboard is set to Off, then you won't see these special characters. Adjusting the Key Repeat slider, even just one notch to the right, should restore the aforementioned functionality.

OS X El Capitan: Set how quickly a key repeats

    Sincerely

Any other suggestions? I checked system preferences but this was fine. My text will freeze when I hold down the key. (No accents display at all.) I then close out the file and reopen and try again. (Tried this in a couple of programs.) Same thing happens. I can insert characters by selecting "show emoji & symbols.

I have the exact same issue. It's repeatable for me in every application I've tried using so far (Safari, Messages, TextEdit). To get the text entry part of the application responsive again, I have to quit and restart the application. I've also confirmed that the Key Repeat slider in System Preferences is not set to Off.
