If you weren't using iCloud, then I've seen some people report that their contacts were missing. When they enabled Contacts in iCloud system prefs, the contacts appeared. They were moved into the iCloud account.

If that is not it, can you explain with more details.

I have been running on the cloud since I got my Mac book 2 years ago.  I upgraded to El Capitan but since have discovered that when I edit or add a contact on my Mac the details is not transferred to my iPhone which is running IOS 9.1.  You can see that once you finished editing or adding a contact the sync is triggered but not to the cloud account for some reason.

Also if you search for a contact on the contacts app under all contact I can find the new additions but if I restrict the search to just the iCloud account the new contacts are missing hence my reasoning that it is not being synchronised. Now is there a setting to indicate that certain contacts should not be sync to the cloud?

Is there any other details you may need?

It sounds like you are editing contacts that are on the "ON MY MAC" "account." That "account" is not sync'd with anything.*

You need to look in Contacts for duplicates where one is under iCloud and the other is in some other account.

Contacts can display contact information from multiple accounts. it doesn't sync with iCloud just because it is in Contacts. It syncs because it is in the iCloud account.

In FINDER, select iCloud Drive.  Click on it and activate it by following all the steps to log in and your contacts will load.

I have the same issue.    contacts added to either iOS or SO are not synced since upgrading to El Capitan.  My iCloud drive has been activated since day 1.  My numbers and pages work as expected.  However, my contacts act like they are local, even tho I have been syncing them for years.  Did el; Capitan change a setting that i need to reset?

Ok so for some reason when you add a contact it defaults to a setting to add these contacts only your PC and does not automatically duplicate to the cloud account - you need to ensure that you always select the iCloud account in contacts when adding new or just drag them to the iCloud account and they will be synched to all devices.

Apple please correct this - I do not see a need to have contact on just a single device and therefore this feature is of no value

It defaults to creating a contact in the Group you have selected in the groups pane (as I suppose it should).

When I go to Finder Go ICloud Drive, nothing happens.  There are no boxes to check.  Everything is in the Cloud but I have few contacts in my folder now.  I have been able to resolve my Calendar syncing problem but not Contacts.  Any other thoughts?

Migrating to El Capitan changed the default account to Google for me

This prevented from syncing with my iPhone

Another bug made in Cupertino !

To change this, Contacts > Preferences > General > Default account and select iCloud.

This did not work for me.  iCloud was already set as my default.  My contacts still do not sync.

Same here, i go to iCloud via browser https://www.icloud.com/#contacts.

Before El Capitan and iOS 9.1, by directly changing info in iClouds, it used to real time sync to my Mac and iPhone.  Now it doesn't sync even I pressed the "Refresh" button on the phone's Contact.

The workaround solution was to edit any info on phone contacts, then the newest info of all contacts will be fetched.  It seems like the Refresh button doesn't work, my workaround is more like "force sync".

This worked.  It would be nice if the contact entry showed what groups it belonged to.
