Oct 27, 2015 10:40 AM in response to David Ellsworth1by ethel,Sorry...I had written an update but didn't appear (probably my error)...in any case...reset only worked temporarily...which is interesting...but went back to old behavior shortly after. I have since been on phone with apple...so far no luck..last thing we tried was reload of El Capitan so could get fresh version of iTunes...didn't help either...so still scratching head....

Oct 27, 2015 11:27 AM in response to ethelby David Ellsworth1,What?????? Apple tech support had you reload the OS? Fresh "version" of iTunes? The offending version only came available last Wednesday. They must know that this is a big deal. Correct me if I'm wrong but a new version of iTunes was supposed to be out anyway to cover the new Apple TV released yesterday. APPLE: Where's 12.3.2 that fixes these problems?!?!?!?

Oct 27, 2015 12:25 PM in response to EastDogby ethel,Just noticed one thing that helps...sort of....if I turn wifi off, after a minute (iTunes getting up to speed that I'm offline)...everything works fine...as soon as I turn on wifi again, problems start again...so clearly something to do with iCloud/iTunes Store/Apple Music and such...I actually was noticing that it did almost seem like it was continually checking at times....Don't have solution to fix it...but at least I can work on some things offline and then connect...and hope they get this fixed!

Oct 27, 2015 2:32 PM in response to ethelby ethel,Ok...from another forum the ONLY thing that seems to work is downgrading until they get this fixed..others also starting to identify likely iTunes Store issue (and/or iCloud)...most likely related to what they are getting ready to do with Apple TV...so, here's the thread about how to downgrade to get it working again until they fix it...after doing so, I am finally back in action...a bit slow, but way, way better than had been since update...

Oct 27, 2015 2:55 PM in response to ethelby Brian Peterson4,Could you please post the thread about downgrading? I'm very worried about losing my playlists so I want to very specific instructions.

Oct 27, 2015 3:00 PM in response to Brian Peterson4by ethel, here is the solution, from 2 different entries in the thread:
I found a fix !!! You just need to downgrade to iTunes 12.3 (and DON'T update after) 1) Open Terminal and type sudo rm -r /Applications/iTunes.app
Don't install version 12.3.1, install 12.3 instead. Worked fine here.
You can get verion 12.3 here: http://www.v3.co.uk/v3-uk/download-review/1957301/apple-itunes-for-mac-1110
and here is the entire thread...do not pay attention to one that just has you go to apple site and download iTunes..that is the same version we are having trouble with, use the link above to get the previous version...: iTunes won't open after updating to 12.3.1

Oct 27, 2015 3:08 PM in response to David Ellsworth1by EastDog,I'm with you, David. And even worse is that they have to know all these (wasteful, unnecessary, often further-complicating) "troubleshooting" actions are going to be useless, but the first-line tech support people are evidently (and not totally without reason) prohibited from concluding and communicating the obvious: it's an Apple bug.
But yes, this is an Apple bug. Seems to have been introduced in iTunes 12.3.1 (or perhaps OS X 11.1, which I believe were made available, and installed by me, on the same day). I have no idea who or how many people it affects, but I'm happy (sad, but frustration does love company!) to at least see it's not just me. It makes iTunes near unusable on a regular basis. I'm not going to deal with the hassle and potential problems of downgrading versions, as I presume Apple will fix this, but a) they need to do so, and b) they need to do it soon. Bugs happen. Stuff gets through testing. No significant, lasting harm. But please fix it now!
(and yes, I have already submitted feedback directly to Apple on this).

Oct 27, 2015 5:22 PM in response to EastDogby David Ellsworth1,Just downgraded to 12.3. I've NEVER had to do this before and terribly disappointed. Nevertheless, it works!

Oct 27, 2015 6:13 PM in response to ethelby Brian Peterson4,Phew! Back to version 12.3.0.44. Everything works. Thank you!

Oct 27, 2015 11:16 PM in response to Brian Peterson4by finniii,Same here. Absolutely miserable experience until I downgraded iTunes. It's the first time I've ever had to do that. I reported the bugs to Apple, and encourage others to do the same.

Oct 31, 2015 9:55 AM in response to Brian Peterson4by Bond1965,How were you able to do this? I have had nothing but problems since accidentally updating to 12.3.1. And when I've tried to install an older version of iTunes it won't let me as I have a newer version. I've restored from Time Machine several times and that worked but then iTunes updates automatically and I'm back to being screwed over again.
I have HUGE music collection on here and I don't want to rebuild my playlists/etc. This has been nothing but one cluster-f!

Oct 31, 2015 11:03 AM in response to Bond1965by David Ellsworth1,Fist thing is turn off further updates in the Apps system preference. Then you need to delete iTunes 12.3.1. You can't just delete it since it's part of the system. I used AppZapper to delete it. Then Pacifist app to load 12.3. The link to download it is in Ethel's post a bit back. Voila!

Nov 11, 2015 8:41 AM in response to Bond1965by finniii,As David Ellsworth 1 said, don't forget to go to your System Preferences ->App Store and uncheck automatic install -otherwise the downgrade (that's really an upgrade for now) won't stay for long.
Start by downloading the older version of iTunes **************
I got the link from another thread on this board, and it works.
Next, open Terminal and type sudo rm -r /Applications/iTunes.app
It will prompt for your password -enter it and press return.
Now you can open the iTunes installer you downloaded and install normally. You won't lose any playlists or songs (at least I didn't the three times I did this before remembering to shut off the automatic install in preferences).
I saw this fix in two other threads that it seems Apple has removed for some reason. Glad I copied/pasted/saved the instructions for future reference! This version of iTunes is ludicrously bad, and I hope Apple comes up with an fix before too much longer. I'm sick of seeing that red dot and reminders that there is a newer version available...

Oct 31, 2015 5:45 PM in response to David Ellsworth1by Bond1965,Thank you for all your help. I chose to do another restore from my Time Machine Back Up external HD and then I unchecked all the updates in my System Preferences and in iTunes. I'm back to 12.3.0.44 which, while slow, at least works. Fingers crossed.
I am afraid of deleting iTunes completely because I have 66,278 items in there taking up 374.33GB. That's A LOT of music. Plus I have most of this on playlists so I can sync easier to my iPod.
Once again, thank you and finnill for all your help and advice.

Oct 31, 2015 5:53 PM in response to Bond1965by finniii,I have a similarly large library, and all was well with mine after doing the delete-reinstall.
I'm curious -12.0.0.44 isn't slow on my machine at all. Works great. What hardware are you running?
