Q: iPad 2 WiFi Will NOT Update - Stuck on 4.3.5 - Tried Everything - Help!

Hello!

I own a medium sized Smartphone/Computer/IT Support Business.  Recently I sold an iPad 2 WiFi, 32GB model to a customer.  It had not been used in some time and was still on iOS 4.3.5.  I did not bother updating it because I was unsure if the customer would want iOS 9.x.x on their device so I left it up to them. Some days later they return stating that they cannot download any apps.  It finally hit me as to why...  She cannot update the iPad past the version of iOS it is on and you cannot download 80% of the apps from the App Store running this version of iOS.

So, I thought this would be easy.  Boot it up into DFU mode and perform a restore.  Well, all seems well for a moment and after it gets to the point to where you see the Apple logo and a loading bar on the iPad you can hear the sound from the computer indicating that the devices is disconnecting but it reconnects again immediately.  Before iTunes will check for this it automatically throws up Error "9".

I AM using an OEM 30 pin connecter, I have tried multiple ports on my system and I have tried multiple systems.  In the past, I could use a Windows XP machine and handle these issues so I tried that.  Well, I cannot install any version of iTunes other than the latest no matter which installer I choose and run.  It gets about 90% done and states, "Rolling Back Changes".  It then cancels the installation and says that the program did not install correctly and to please try again.  Blah, blah, blah.

I only have SHSH blobs for iOS 8.4.1 and 9.0.1.  I have not tried to stitch my blobs into an IPSW and restore using it.  I wanted to try and do this the "iTunes/Apple" way which is not frowned upon.  But if I have to, I will do this and may even jailbreak the device if I must.  It simply has to be able to be updated to iOS 6.x.x, 8.x.x or 9.x.x.

Can anyone offer any suggestion?  BTW, this is the link iTunes provides when the device fails to update.  Helpless of course.  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203843

Thank you all in advance for any insight or suggestions.

Regards,

Dave

iPad 2, iOS 4.3.3, iOS 4.3.5 was not in the list...

Did you try iTunes 12.1.3.6? I had no problem installing that version on Windows XP SP3. Did you try installing iTunes on other Windows XP machines with the latest service pack and patches? How about using Windows 7 machine + iTunes 12.3 to update iOS?

No, I have not tried that version.  I've downloaded it and am trying to install it on my XP laptop.  I'll give it a try and let you know.  Thanks for the help friend!

Ok, so I tried it on my Windows XP Pro SP3 laptop.  The same version of iTunes you suggested...  I'm getting the same error...  Error (9).  I've tried different cables and ports.  I just do not understand why this would be happening.  I know iOS 4.3.5 was a small, bug fix release but should there be this many issues with trying to update it?

Oh, and get this, every time it fails it sticks the iPad in a 'recovery loop".  It just sits at the recovery screen.  Doesn't matter if you turn it on/off, hard reset or whatever.  In fact, I had to use the Tiny Umbrella "Fix Recovery" in order to even get it out of this loop.  I've been dealing with this for 2 weeks now.  There must be a fix.  Are there any versions of iOS that Apple is still signing that I can use to perform a "Shift-Restore"?  8.x.x maybe?  Oh, and no, I have not tried 12.3 on a Windows 7 machine yet.  But that looks like the next step.  *smh* This is not looking good.

Without being over iOS (is it 5.x.x or 6.x.x?) the device is practically useless.  You cannot download anything from the App store hardly and so many features are missing that most people want to use.  I'm just really stuck here and what Apple would charge to "repair" it would cost more than it is even worth...

    Any other ideas???

I may have misunderstood your original post. I thought there were 2 problems:

    1. iTunes setup on WinXP keeps rolling back (you can't install iTunes on WinXP successfully)

    2. iOS upgrade thru iTunes on WinXP throws error 9

Your last post makes me think that you actually did not have problem with iTunes installation. It's just that iOS upgrade will not complete successfully. I'm sorry to say that I have no other suggestions to offer other than using the latest iTunes version 12.3 but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Apologies, let me make myself clear.  I'm a bit frustrated so I probably listed the details incorrectly.

First I tried updating the iPad on my Windows 7 PC using the latest version of iTunes.  No dice.

Secondly, I could not get an older version of iTunes to install on my Windows XP machine.  That is, until I tried the version you recommended.  Still, no dice.

So, the latest version of iTunes will not work on the Windows XP system because it only supports x64 architecture.  The version you recommend did of course but I still ran into the same issue.

So yes, I was having problems installing iTunes on Windows XP, I just ran into an issue installing the same on Windows 7 until I switched the library files around so iTunes 12.1.3.6 now works on both the XP and 7 systems but I still have the same problem.  I keep seeing USB related issues being referenced but I have tried literally 6 different OEM cables.  Maybe the charge port has some issues (unlikely) or there is a logic board issue...  I'm not sure.

So you have addressed both of my problems.  Unfortunately I have been unable to work around this.  This iPad is older but in perfect shape.  No H2O damage or physical damage.  Never been Jailbroken nor attempted.  It just doesn't make any sense...

But thank you for your advice.  Maybe I will figure this out later.  If only I had some shsh blobs for iOS 4.3.3 from this device I could downgrade and then update but...I do not...  Lol!

Again, thank you for your help.

    Regads,

    Dave

Dave, apology isn't necessary. It sounds like you level of iPad expertise is higher than mine. I'm just a regular iPad user who works with computers for a living. I have never bothered to do anything out of the ordinary iOS upgrades whether it's thru iTunes or over the air (iOS 5 or later). I suppose you have tried factory reset before upgrading, right? Sorry, I have no more suggestions. Hope you'll find a way to get the upgrade installed.

    ShagCA,

Well I appreciate your input still.  You've been the only one to try and help out of the (literally) thousands of people who patrol these forums.  Apple will not help without a trip to the closest Apple store where setting up a reservation is similar to that of a fancy French restaurant.  It's always packed and the so called "Geniuses" are somewhat knowledgeable but honest, like you, I have worked in the IT field my entire professional life.  For over 14 years I've worked in and around Enterprise level networking environments.

I recently picked up on phones about 2 years ago when a friend and I started repairing devices and flipping them as a side gig.  Now, it's all that I do, I resigned from my job with a mid-sized IT company and decided that I would go out and open my own business based on what I had learned about smartphones and tablets in addition to my existing IT skills.  I have a little shop and while I'm not getting rich I'm getting by.

One thing that hurt was that iPhone 5, 5c and 5S LCD's have risen in cost by $30 each so the profit margin was squeezed so tightly that it's almost not even worth repairing an iPhone.  And iPhone 6S LCD costs $430 so you can forget that.  LOL!

Anyway, I guess I'm gone off on a tangent again but that's how I ended up here, today, talking to you.   Plus, it never hurts to meet new people (even online) to continue networking and possibly earn new clients, learn new things or find a new friend.  And with that being said if there is ever anything I can help you with (tech wise) do not hesitate to hit me up on here.  I just joined today so I'm unsure if they have a Private Messaging system but if not, I'm on here, you can find me.  Moreover, I'm always in the market for smartphones, tablets, computers, etc.  I buy stuff from all over the world honestly so if you ever have a smart device, computer or any expensive electronics you wish to sell hit me up if you so desire.

I'm done now, but again, thank you so much for trying to help.  We did cover a point that I had not so you did not something that I did not.  This is the only iPad 2 I've ever had this happen with and I may never know why it's like this but if I had to guess it would be because someone tried/did Jailbreak it sometime in the past and then restored or updated it to iOS 4.3.5.  I've read that jailbreaking can ruin the bootloader and even if you reset the flags so there is no recovery loop you cannot force the device to install another version of iOS unless you have signed blobs (shsh) from that device and while it was running the particular version of iOS that you need the blobs for.

With that said, download the latest version of "TinyUmbrella".  It pulls all of your blobs that have been signed by Apple and are currently being signed by Apple so that in the near future you will be able to downgrade to an earlier iOS even after Apple stops signing apt tickets for iOS versions.  When they stop signing, you're stuck with it.  And right now the only versions they are signing are 9.1.  Not even 9.0...

Sorry this was so long but why not eh?

Lol!  Have a good one friend!  Maybe we'll talk again!

Wish you nothing but the best. FYI watch out for forum cops... jailbreaking discussions are taboo in here and frowned upon.

No kidding?  Well I appreciate the warning!  I'm not really into Jailbreaking myself, I did a few devices back in the day but imho it really isn't worth the effort.  Then again, I'm not an iPhone (Apple) fan/user.  It's Android all the way for me.  ;-)

But again, thanks for the heads up!

Yes, it is, no argument there.  That's the version that iTunes has constantly been trying to update this iPad 2 up to.  Good thing they released 2 updates after iOS 9.0.0 because they had some pretty serious security holes in their lock screen pin and fingerprint systems.  Geez, do some research on it and see how easy it was to view the "important" stuff on ANYONE's phone.  It's nuts!

And on another note, any idea how I can update this iPad?  Lol!

Dave, looks like you're not alone. This posting happens to float to the top a few minutes ago: ipad 2 can't upgrade to IOS 9 (ununknown error (9)

It's probably a canned response but worth a shot? Firewall is something we did not discuss in this thread.

    ShagCA,

Yes, it sure is...  I've found a number of other posts related to this as well.  All of the responses are the same.  The thing is is that I have updated iPad 2nd gens on this same version of iOS before.  But it was before iOS 9 was released.  I am willing to bet that if I were updating to 8.x.x with that being the newest version of iOS there would be no issue.  Apple has a way of "leaving you hanging".  Another example would be the iPhone 6 Plus I sent off for Warranty Repair on September 24th.  Apple cannot find it, the postal service cannot find it, it has simply disappeared.  And do you know what they told me?  I'm just s%$t out of luck.  Even though I have proof I dropped it off (using their labels mind you) they still will do nothing to help.  I just sent off a device I had invested $390 on to oblivion.  I have sent many devices to Apple for repair and this has never happened so 1 out of 100 isn't bad.  But 2 or 3 times I have sent items that have been damaged on the way to Apple and I had to prove I did not do it.

So, like that, Apple has moved on with iOS and if you did not update in time then that's that apparently.  I spoke with an Apple rep on the phone the other day using the Telephone Tech SUpport I have with and iPhone 6S and I just brought up the iPad 2 real quick.  He said that they would not even support legacy devices like that any longer.  So getting help from an Apple store or Apple themselves is out of the question.

I am going to have to wait until I can do something with the saved files I mentioned before you told me to keep on the low.  With those, I should be able to update to iOS 8.x.x.

And thank you for looking in on this again, I really appreciate it.  If I find a solution I will post it for all to see.  Especially you.   Thanks again friend!

I'll buy it off you, so you can buy another iPad running iOS 9 to begin with and not deal with this. I have been looking for an iPad 2 running iOS 4( I actually prefer iOS 4 over iOS 9)
