Q: unable to add yahoo/google mail accounts

since upgrading to El Capitan I'm unable to add any yahoo or google account ...

when trying to add an account (gmail or yahoo) into mail an error message pops up stating:

Connection Insecure

Failed to verify the server certificate. This could be because of your network configuration or your proxy settings.

Screen Shot 2015-09-30 at 1.02.08 PM.png

when trying to access the accounts via web browser all goes ok, so there’s no network/internet connection or proxy issues. In fact, I'm using no proxy whatsoever.

The error is the same if trying to add the accounts using mail or the internet accounts system preference ... I imagine is something related to OAuth since for any of these two providers that is the authentication method used to configure them

any help would be greatly appreciated

    Hi all

I have the same problem that El Capitan won't let me add my google account due to a security error. I used to have it configured, but on installing El Capitan it gave me errors, so I ended up removing it and now cannot add it back on. On another computer where I have El Capitan as well, I did not have the same issue.

I have tried doing the method you recommend, but all the certificates that show up once I search for "veri" are valid - so if there's no invalid one, what else can I do?

    many thanks!

I've also tried deleting the entire keychains folder, restarted, then emptied the trash: all other services (iCloud, Google Drive, etc) failed and started asking for the password again (which made me think that the deletion was successful). But I still cannot add gmail as an account in preferences: same security error. Why, oh why? !

I've had this exact problem since upgrading to El Capitan. Mail was having trouble syncing with three of my addresses, so I tried deleting two of them to see if re-adding worked. Instead I get the same certificate error when I try to re-add them. I should note one is a gmail address while the other is a custom domain address hosted with gmail.

All the verisign certs in my keychain have the green check too. Any ideas?

It was not straight forward for me but I finally got it working.  The key was ensure all invalid certificates in the "My Certificates" and "Certificates" Category were deleted, then restart the Mail app.

I have a little write up below.  Hope it is helpful.  Thanks everyone, your discussions helped me narrowed down to solve the issue finally.

what you did worked for me.  I had to go into Keychain, into "my certificates" and delete them and then it worked for yahoo!  thanks

For me the fix was to disable my anti virus software. In my case it was Avast Mail Shield that was causing the issue. Turned it off and now I can my Gmail account again, at last!

    OS: 10.11.1

I was experiencing the same issue as described in the first post of this thread. After investigating the issue in more detail I was able to narrow my problem down to the Avast Mail Shield. I was unable to disable the mail shield and had to completely remove the product. After removing Avast, I was able to add a Google Account to Internet Accounts.

I will be opening a support ticket with Avast regarding this issue.

so this was very helpful, problem solved but for someone like me who did not know where to find the keychain access here it is:

    1. Open Keychain Access (you can get to it by choosing Utilities from the Go menu in the Finder).

Then delete all red and expired, just leave green or authenticated.

Thank you! This was very helpful. Verification Certificates were not my issue. It was my Avast shield.

I solved my version of the problem by removing the Avast VPN client.  I don't use it but it runs anyway and seriously breaks stuff in the network stack.
