Q: trackpad clicks but doesn't move on macbook pro 13'' late 2014

I have a Macbook Pro Retina 13" from late 2014, running OS X El Capitan. Earlier today (while using Yosemite, before upgrading to El Capitan) my trackpad stopped moving. I finished watching a movie on my TV (through HDMI), left home for a couple of hours, went back, pulled of the HDMI cable, woke up the mac and found that the cursor won't move. I restarted the computer and then the coursor moved for a couple of seconds while I was at the log in screen. after that it froze dead again. During the movie, the update screen popped up for a minor security update (I think, I'm not sure), but I closed it. that was the last time when my trackpad had worked

using an external USB mouse works perfectly. the trackpad won't move the cursor but left click works. right click or two finger tap/click and every other gestures are not working.

i installed the security update that popped during the movie. i upgraded to OS X El Capitan. I reseted the PRAM and the SMC. I tried turning on and off the Accessibility option "Ignore trackpad when an external USB mouse is connected". and of course, numerous reboots. I even tried to gently slap my trackpad with my open palm (I read it on some other forums as a solution to trackpad problems). none of this things worked.

I did not spill anything on the trackpad. it just stopped working somewhere between the time when the security upgrade popped up and the time when I disconnected the HDMI cable and try to use my Mac.

Might this be a hardware problem? I want to mention that I live in Romania, where no official Apple Store exists, so the option of going to the Genius Bar is impossible for me

Thank you in advance for your information and help
